The last five months have been quite eventful for Harley-Davidson. Although we’ve seen some highs (read new reveals), they’ve been joined by a couple of recall announcement hiccups. First, the 2023 CVO duo was recalled in October 2023, then the CVO Street Glide in December 2023.

Now, in barely three months, we have another recall from the Motor Company. This time, the victim is the all-electric LiveWire S2 Del Mar, which was launched just eight months ago. Deliveries began towards the end of last year, so it’s still a very new product.

The news comes straight from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to LiveWire’s letter, certain examples of the S2 Del Mar electric motorcycle have a faulty Vehicle Supervisory Control (VSC) module. This can initiate a total vehicle shutdown in certain riding conditions without any warnings. In turn, it could risk a serious accident, and you won’t be able to restart the motorcycle. The company explains it as:

The Vehicle Supervisory Control (VSC) software on the subject MY24 LiveWire S2DM model motorcycles may, during certain operating conditions, initiate a shutdown of the electric vehicle powertrain without providing an indication to the rider prior to initiating the shutdown sequence. If this occurs while in motion, the vehicle may not be able to be restarted. Unexpected loss of propulsion while the vehicle is in motion without the ability to restart may increase the risk of a crash.

Chronology Of The Recall

When did the issue come to light, you ask? A few months ago. On December 15, 2023, the company received the first report of an alleged unexpected loss of propulsion in a Del Mar. Then, towards the end of January, a technical sub-committee started a formal investigation. Two more loss of propulsion reports came to light, potentially related to the VSC. The software was determined as the root cause and reported to LiveWire’s Executive Decision Authority. That led to the official recall notification to NHTSA.

LiveWire claims 523 units of the Del Mar fall under the recall, all of which suffer from the defect. These were manufactured between July 26, 2023 and January 30, 2024, with VIN range from 1HD3GCYB0RB550038 to 1HD3GCYHXRB550939. If yours makes the cut, you must’ve received a notification already.
