Sydney driver crashes $800,000 Ferrari 296 GTS convertible

A motoring dream is in tatters as a Ferrari driver in Sydney has a very bad morning.

A Sydney driver has had a morning he would rather forget, by crashing his $800,000 Ferrari 296 GTS in a suburban street.

The car, a Rosso Corsa Red Ferrari 296 GTS convertible, suffered significant front-end damage during a crash in a suburban street in the inner-western Sydney suburb of Five Dock.

Priced from $668,146 before options and on-road costs – or approximately $800,000 on the road – the Ferrari 296 GTS is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine paired with a 7.5kWh plug-in hybrid (PHEV) battery.

It has a combined power output of 610kW – or nearly six Toyota Corolla hybrids – and a claimed electric-only driving range of 25km before the petrol engine turns on.

The 296 is lauded as being the first ‘real’ Ferrari with a six-cylinder engine, with previous classic models powered by V6 engines branded as ‘Dino’, named after company founder Enzo Ferrari’s first son.

Buyers can choose from a coupe ‘GTB’ (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) or a retractable-hardtop convertible GTS ‘Spider’.

According to reports, no one was seriously injured in the Sydney accident, but a man in his 50s was taken to hospital with a neck injury.

Can this crashed Ferrari be repaired?

While the damaged car is in a bad state, the positioning of the Ferrari’s engine and battery behind the seats has placed the most complex parts of the car out of harm’s way for this particular front-end collision.

Although the ultimate decision as to when or if this prancing horse will run again will be decided by the owner and (hopefully) his insurance company, Australia features two of Ferrari’s factory-supported Classiche Workshops that manage vehicle restoration and repair, meaning that the skills and support needed to see the 296 back on the road are available.
