The most powerful Cayenne of all time is here to elevate the standards within the plug-in hybrid segment
What’s New For 2024?
For 2024, Cayenne receives a whole new exterior design. This new, sharper edge exterior builds on its predecessor, keeping the Cayenne more in tune with Porsche’s current corporate design strategy, taking cues clearly from its Taycan, and 911 models. A new two-valve suspension has been added, along with a return to form for the Cayenne S in the form of V-8 power. Some years back, the S model resorted to six-cylinder power, but Porsche has decided to revert to a V-8 strategy for that trim level.
Speaking of power, all models have been upgraded under the hood, putting out more power in every trim level than last year’s models. Inside we can expect Porsche’s new digital cockpit driver experience display. This new digital display removes the beloved center analog tachometer, once a signature interior element, gives way to the digital bandwagon every manufacturer appears to be jumping onto these days.
2024 Highlights
- A new exterior design has been applied to the Cayenne and Cayenne Coupe
- New two-valve suspension solution
- New Porsche digital cockpit, and all-digital gauge cluster
- Power upgrades to all engine options
- The V-8 returns to the Cayenne S model

Engine Specifications And Performance
The Porsche Cayenne has always stood as a performance SUV benchmark. Where others focused on creature comforts and rested on their laurels, Porsche remained focused on providing the legendary handling they are known for. Even for such a large vehicle, the engineers at Porsche seem to defy the laws of physics. A major factor in achieving a sports car-like feel is the suspension tuning and, of course, the powertrain options available with the Cayenne.
3.0-liter V-6:
Porsche’s V-6, one that is shared in other Volkswagen portfolio products, serves as the base engine option for the entry-level Cayenne models. Putting down a respectable 348 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque means every Cayenne model can sprint to 60 miles per hour in under 6.0 seconds. For an entry level, relatively large SUV, this is phenomenal performance. It only gets better as you move into more powerful models.
4.0-liter V-8:
It’s no surprise we find another VW corporate engine under the hood of the Cayenne. This one though, is quite fantastic. The 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo monster that lurks within the Cayenne S model and up outputs anywhere from 468 up to 650 horsepower depending on the model, and from 442 to 626 pound-feet of torque.
These are deep into serious sports car figures, all baked into a family hauler. As mentioned before, the 4.0-liter turbocharged mill is now standard, once again, on the Cayenne S model. This same engine has been tuned up and strengthened for “GT” duty in the Cayenne Turbo GT model, the flagship Cayenne Coupe model.
Hybrid Versions:
Not only does Porsche offer great V-6 and V-8 options, but hybridized versions of both that bring massive power and efficiency. With up to 512 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque from the hybrid V-6 models, there is plenty of motivation available for the Cayenne, while allowing for EV-only operation. If that isn’t enough, there is, of course, the hybrid V-8 option, which significantly turns up the heat, allowing for a massive total system output of 729 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque available.

Towing Capabilities And Payload Capacity
The new Porsche Cayenne can tow a maximum of 7,700 pounds in all trim levels except for the top-of-the-line Turbo E-Hybrid model. The physical limitation of the Cayenne’s towing capacity, like most vehicles in its class, is not due to a power limitation, but rather a suspension limitation. 7,700 pounds is a completely respectable number for a performance-oriented vehicle. This rating allows the Cayenne to easily tow a pair of jet skis, a small trailer, or maybe even another Porsche behind it.

Off-Road Capability
The Porsche Cayenne was launched as a do-it-all vehicle, not just another mundane SUV. Porsche certainly succeeded by injecting some serious on-road performance into the high-rider. What about when the pavement ends? Porsche has considered the “U” part of SUV as the Cayenne has remained a star in the off-road department.
With up to 8.3 inches of ground clearance and respectable approach and departure angles, the Cayenne is a capable off-roader with a slick all-wheel-drive system out of the box. For its class, the Cayenne has routinely exhibited climbing capabilities that rivaled much more aggressive off-road focused vehicles. You can even explore the Cayenne’s off-road prowess at Porsche’s Experience Center, with an off-road section closed course.

Interior Technology And Comfort
Best Interior Features Of The 2024 Porsche Cayenne
- New Porsche live cockpit driver infotainment
- Upscale interior leather colors/materials
- Passenger-focused infotainment screen
- Cayenne signature center grab handles remain
Porsche has been updating/upgrading the interior of the Cayenne continually over the generations, but this new 2024 model in particular represents a bit of a leap forward. Where button clusters and interactivity had once been complex and bloated, has become sleek and tech-savvy. The signature center-mounted grab handles remain, a Cayenne mainstay, nods to the Cayenne’s off-road capability.
Now available, is a passenger-only infotainment screen, a trend that is flooding the luxury automotive market. This was an unlikely addition to the Cayenne, but certainly a welcome one, adding to its family-friendliness. Porsche is, of course, known for using quality materials inside their cabins, and the Cayenne benefits from that philosophy.
Technology
Porsche has significantly updated the infotainment inside the Cayenne, inserting no less than three screens into the dashboard. One serves as the new driver gauge cluster, while the center screen infotainment has been enlarged and more densely populated. There is now an additional infotainment screen solely for passenger entertainment/control, as mentioned above. This is a first for Cayenne, and Porsche in general.
Interior Dimensions
The interior dimensions are not yet available for the Cayenne and Cayenne Coupe models, with the exception of their cargo capacities at 20 cubic-feet. This information along with other capacities should become available within the model year.
Safety And Reliability
Porsche has routinely been awarded as one of the most reliable brands, scoring 6th in JD Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. With 175 problems per 100 vehicles, it stands ahead of BMW’s 190 problems per 100 and far ahead of Mercedes’ 218 problems per 100 vehicles.
Driver Assistance Features
Porsche has introduced a standard host of safety features commonly seen on today’s luxury vehicles including adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, and other helpful driver aids. Other integrated systems, including Porsche’s InnoDrive and ultra-strong ceramic composite brake system go a long way towards refining the driving experience.
ADAS Systems:
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Lane Keep Assist
- Traffic Sign Recognition
- Lane Change Assist
Other Safety Systems:
- Porsche InnoDrive (satellite data + adaptive cruise control)
- Surround View Camera
- Porsche Dynamic Lighting System

2024 Porsche Cayenne Versus Its Competitors
Porsche may not have been the first truly sporty SUV in 2002 with its debut of the Cayenne, but it was hellbent on being the best. The original quick SUV, the BMW X5, from 1999 set the stage for a new type of SUV. Manufacturers were quickly trying to inject the sportiness of their sports cars into the wildly popular SUV format.
The versatile BMW X5 and Cayenne were the first true examples of brands aiming to defy the laws of physics. Yes, the Mercedes-Benz ML (now GLE) debuted a year before the X5, but it wasn’t a unibody design until 2006.
How The Porsche Cayenne Compares To The Mercedes-Benz GLE
-
2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 2024 Porsche Cayenne Model GLE Cayenne Engine 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, 4.0-liter turbocharged V-8 3.0-liter V-6, 4.0-liter V-8 Transmission 9-speed automatic 8-speed automatic Horsepower 255-603 HP 348-729 HP Torque 295-627 LB-FT 368-700 LB-FT Driveline AWD AWD MSRP $62,650 $79,200 Towing Capacity 7,700 pounds 7,700 pounds 0-60 MPH 3.7-7.0 seconds 3.1-5.7 seconds
It’s not who does it first, but rather, who does it best. That’s exactly what Porsche set out to achieve when developing the Cayenne. The model that arguably saved Porsche was up against Mercedes-Benz all the way back in 1998, but with the emergence of the mighty Cayenne, things improved drastically.
Fast-forward to today, and you’ll find the two still battling it out, with over 600 horsepower in their most powerful variants (now over 700 horsepower for the Cayenne). One might conclude a pair of supercars were duking it out on track, when in fact we live in a world where 600-700 horsepower crossovers zooming to soccer practice is a reality.
Mercedes-Benz injects their signature delux-lux into just about every vehicle they produce, and the GLE is no exception. The Mercedes-GLE has evolved into a high-performer, luxury crossover, one that Porsche, until now, couldn’t really match in terms of interior, design, or material quality. Where Mercedes was playing catch up on performance (and has with their brilliant 4.0-liter hot-vee twin turbo V-8), Porsche has matched efforts in the interior department with new tech and overall top-notch fit and finish.
Ultimately, it comes down to the drivers’ personal preference on vehicle strengths. The GLE is still more posh & plush, where the Cayenne remains the performance king. It’s worth noting the Porsche’s $16,000 higher starting price, a significant jump from Mercedes’ entry into the segment.
How The Porsche Cayenne Compares To The BMW X5/X6
-
2024 Porsche Cayenne 2024 BMW X5/X6 Model Cayenne X5/X6 Engine 3.0-liter V-6, 4.0-liter V-8 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, 4.4-liter turbocharged V-8 Transmission 8-speed automatic 8-speed automatic Horsepower 348-729 HP 375-617 HP Torque 368-700 LB-FT 398-553 LB-FT Driveline AWD RWD/AWD MSRP $79,200 $65,200 Towing Capacity 7,700 pounds 7,200 pounds 0-60 MPH 3.1-5.7 seconds 3.7-5.3 seconds
BMW has a strong contender with the X5, one of its best-selling vehicles. Although BMW and Porsche have been battling it out for years to take the title of best-performance SUV, these are two very different beasts. Where the BMW has gone the way of luxury, Porsche has remained fairly utilitarian, until now. Porsche sees the competition infusing more luxury into a segment where drivers expect it, and is responding with a more suave Cayenne.
The latest generation X5/X6 has grown significantly, gaining incredibly luxurious interiors, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a force to be reckoned with. The performance of the M Competition-badged BMW SUVs is very strong, boasting over 600 horsepower from their 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engines.
Their performance is undeniably comparable to that of the Cayenne’s, however, the very sportiest of Cayenne models still deliver a level of character that is unmatched even by the ultimate driving machine. Between the two, it’s splitting hairs, so it comes down to the vastly different approaches to styling. BMW provides an angular, arguably more busy design, while Porsche retains more organic/conservative shapes and lines.
There’s a Little Controversy Amid the Porsche Cayenne’s 20th Birthday
Porsche’s first four-door car surrounds itself with controversy while celebrating its 20th birthday
How Much Does A 2024 Porsche Cayenne Cost?
Starting at a slightly above average $79,200 for the base model, the Cayenne represents a roughly $14,000-$17,000 leap in cost compared to it’s closest rivals. The flagship Cayenne Turbo GT starts at an almost unbelievable $196,300, a $69,000 over the top-of-the-line BMW X6 M Competition, and $67,000 more than Mercedes-AMG’s GLE 63S coupe.
The differentiator here is the Turbo GT stands in a class all alone developed from Porsche’s ultra-focused GT-car program, something BMW and Mercedes-AMG haven’t added yet. This would be the equivalent of BMW making an X6 CSL model or Mercedes-AMG adding a GLE 63S Black Series. The Cayenne Coupe model starts at $84,300, while Mercedes only offers the GLE coupe as AMG models starting at $89,800 for the GLE 53. BMW enters the large SUV coupe game with the X6 Xdrive 40i, starting at $73,900.

Is It Worth Buying A Porsche Cayenne?
The Porsche Cayenne is a rock solid performance SUV that should not be overlooked. While it is popular, the Cayenne remains a reliable vehicle, with a unique style, impressive performance, and best of all, it lives up to the coveted Porsche crest that adorns its hood. Although it enters the market at a slightly higher price-point than it’s closest competitors, the Cayenne carries a cultural weight to it, the others can’t quite match.
Porsche has upped the lux, to match the legendary performance for 2024. The Cayenne has proven to be an off-road-worthy vehicle, while impressing on-road as well. Available with significant updates, it aligns with Porsche’s new design identity, and now contains all the tech you’d ever need. The significant redesign for this model year gives drivers an ideal opportunity to take advantage of a fresh face that should remain in-style for quite a few years.
