2024 Lexus TX

Expert Opinion: An all-new three-row SUV model from Lexus that pickups up where the RX-L left off. Sharing its underpinnings with the Toyota Grand Highlander, the all-new TX addresses one of the RX-L’s biggest drawbacks by offering a roomy third-row that can comfortably seat adults. While it debuted alongside the more rugged GX, the mid-size Lexus TX is the roomiest that Lexus has ever built, even outgunning the flagship LX. The all-new Lexus TX is available with a range of powertrain options, including one ICE and two electrified models, with the PHEV model offering up to 33 miles of all-electric range.

Pros
  • Gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models available
  • Functional three-row crossover with healthy 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space
  • Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 active safety and convenience features standard on all models
Cons
  • No panoramic sunroof on TX 550h+ f models for nearly $80,000 price tag
  • Limited interior color options
  • Dynamic Rear Steering feature only available on TX 500h F Sport Performance model

Lexus has a lot of SUVs, but the 2024 Lexus TX is all new to the automaker’s lineup. After dropping the widely disappointing extended wheel-base Lexus RX L, the TX is Lexus’ sole dedicated three-row crossover. Sharing the TNGA-K platform with Toyota’s Grand Highlander, the TX gets the practicality of the Grand Highlander with Lexus’ updated styling and luxury appointments.

The 2024 TX offers three models: TX 350, TX 500h, and TX 550h+. Within the TX 350, TX 550h, and TX 550h+ models, there are five grades: Standard, Premium, Luxury, F Sport Performance Premium, and F Sport Performance Luxury. Pricing starts at $55,050.

Powertrain options include gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants. All-wheel drive is available, as well as Dynamic Rear Steering on select models. Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, an integrated suite of active safety equipment and convenience features, is standard on all TX models. With room for six or seven passengers (depending on model and second-row configuration), Lexus is determined to create a three-row crossover for everyone, worthy of competing against the likes of the Volvo XC90 and Acura MDX.

Moving up to the TX 500h hybrid performance-focused model, the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine gets matched to a six-speed automatic transmission, integrated Power Control Unit, and a 64 kW motor. A 76-kW eAxle mounted in the rear consists of an inverter and motor enabling the TX 500h to be all-wheel drive as standard. Finally, the top-of-the-line TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid combines a 3.5-liter V-6 with Lexus’ DIRECT4 two-motor transaxle e-all-wheel drive system.

Towing Capabilities And Payload Capacity

The Lexus TX may not be the first choice to tow anything with, but it is capable of handling something the size of a large travel trailer as needed. With the base 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and eight-speed automatic, the TX 350 is rated to tow 5,000 pounds. Moving up to the 2.4-liter hybrid powertrain with the six-speed automatic, the TX 500h is also rated to tow 5,000 pounds.

Finally, the TX 550h+ with the V-6 plug-in hybrid powertrain and CVT is also rated to tow 5,000 pounds. Despite the added boost in power from electrification, neither hybrid model can tow more than the base turbocharged engine.

If crawling over boulders is the goal, the Lexus TX should avoid that. However, every model is available with all-wheel drive and includes a Trail Mode. According to Lexus, Trail Mode provides integrated control of the all-wheel drive, braking, and drive force. This allows the TX to avoid slipping when driving on wet or uneven surfaces.

Safety And Reliability

Although official safety testing ratings have yet to be released for the 2024 Lexus TX, it is well-equipped with a lengthy list of standard safety equipment and active safety features to protect its occupants. In addition to having the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 standard on all models, the TX includes 10 airbags, lower anchors and tethers for children’s car seats, a backup camera, vehicle stability control and traction control system, anti-lock brakes, and blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert as standard.

Driver Assistance Features

All 2024 TX models get the latest Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 from the automaker. Lexus says this includes an integrated suite of active safety and convenience features. Driver assistance features on the Lexus TX are among the same found on the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander.

2024 Lexus TX Versus Its Competitors

The 2024 Lexus TX competes in the mid-size luxury crossover segment. Its direct competitors include the Acura MDX and Volvo XC90. The Lexus TX is the perfect competitor against both the Acura MDX and Volvo XC90 because the TX offers both a performance-focused model and an efficiency-focused model. The Acura MDX is a direct competitor to the TX 500h performance hybrid model and the XC90 is a direct competitor to both the TX 500h and TX 550h+ hybrid models.

How The 2024 Acura MDX Compares To The 2024 Lexus TX

The Acura MDX received a full redesign in 2022. Honda’s luxury arm has left the MDX unchanged for the 2024 model year. Powering the MDX are two V6 engines, one non-turbocharged and one turbocharged for the Type S model. The base 3.5-liter V-6 puts out 290 horsepower. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 increases the power output for the MDX to 355 horsepower. Both engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Overall, the 2024 Acura MDX has more power than the base TX 350 and the performance-focused TX500h, but not the TX 550h+ plug-in model. All Lexus TX models have better fuel economy ratings than the Acura MDX.

The 2024 Acura MDX offers less cargo capacity overall than the Lexus TX. For context, the cargo volume behind the third row of the MDX is only 16.3 cubic feet compared to the TX’s 20.2 cubic feet. In terms of safety, the MDX’s active safety features are mostly in line with what the Lexus TX offers, but the MDX does not offer auto high-beams or parking sensors as standard, nor is an automatic parking assist function available. Pricing for the 2024 Acura MDX starts lower than the Lexus TX at $51,045, including destination and handling fees. The top-of-the-line Acura model also ends up less than the Lexus TX at $74,695.

How The 2024 Volvo XC90 Compares To The 2024 Lexus TX

The second-generation Volvo XC90 has been on sale since 2016. The design of the Swedish automaker’s flagship SUV has aged like fine wine, receiving only minor updates to the exterior, powertrains, and technology to date. An all-electric EV model, the Volvo EX90, is expected to begin delivery in 2024.

The base 2024 Volvo XC90 B5 mild hybrid model is good for 247 horsepower. The B6 model bumps power up to 295 horsepower. Opting for the XC90 T8 Recharge model boosts power to 455 horsepower. All 2024 XC90 models come standard with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The XC90 B5 and B6 models are less powerful than the 2024 Lexus TX 350 and TX 500h models, but the XC90 T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid throws down more power than the Lexus TX 550h+.

In terms of efficiency, the XC90 B5 and B6 models are just as efficient as the TX 350 but fall short compared to the TX 500h model. The XC90 T8 Recharge is rated for 32 miles of electric-only range compared to the TX plug-in hybrid’s 33 miles of EV range.

Cargo capacity in the 2024 Volvo XC90 is slightly higher than the 2024 Lexus TX, measuring 21.8 cubic feet behind the third row. Looking at safety, the Volvo XC90 offers a more advanced active safety system, which includes the automaker’s Pilot Assist function that integrates both adaptive lane centering and lane centering.

However, this is not considered an autonomous driving function and therefore requires hands on the wheel at all times, which is monitored by the vehicle. The base MSRP for the 2024 Volvo XC90 starts at $56,000, slightly more than the 2024 Lexus TX. Pricing for XC90 T8 Recharge models starts at $71,900 and can exceed $90,000 with all features, options, and accessories added from the factory (not including additional service and warranty packages).

How Much Does A 2024 Lexus TX Cost?

Pricing for the 2024 Lexus starts at $55,050 for the base TX 350 FWD model, including delivery, processing, and handling fees. The premium and luxury trims add standard features and amenities that move the price of the TX 350 to the $60,000 range. Jumping to the mid-range TX 500h F Sport Performance hybrid models moves pricing up to, and past, the $70,000 threshold (depending on premium or luxury trim).

The top-of-the-line TX 550h+ luxury plug-in hybrid model starts at $78,050. While the TX 500h hybrid model will not qualify, the IRS has yet to announce if the TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid model will qualify for the new clean vehicle tax credit in the U.S.

Fuel Economy

The Lexus lineup was missing a mid-size SUV that prioritized efficiency for too long. The 2024 Lexus TX adds multiple powertrain options, both gas and hybrid. Based on EPA estimates, no Lexus TX model gets less than 20 mpg.

Despite the added weight of the electric motor and battery components, the TX 500h gets a decent four-mile-per-gallon combined boost over the gas-only TX model, and the TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid model adds six miles per gallon to its combined rating over the gas-only TX. In its electric-only mode, the TX 550h+ is projected to have a manufacturer-estimated EV range rating of 33 miles. The EPA has not yet released miles per gallon equivalent ratings for the 2024 TX 550h+ model.

Is It Worth Buying The 2024 Lexus TX?

The 2024 Lexus TX is a competent addition to the automaker’s lineup. The abundance of active safety equipment and technology, convenience features, cargo space, and efficiency make the 2024 TX an attractive buy in the mid-size SUV segment. Compared to the Acura MDX and Volvo XC90, the Lexus TX is more fuel-efficient, powerful, and practical in terms of seating and cargo capacity than the Acura MDX, although the TX is more expensive than the MDX.

Against the Volvo XC90, the Lexus TX 350 and TX 500h models are just as fuel efficient yet more powerful than the XC90 B5 and B6 models. The XC90 T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid offers slightly less EV range compared to the Lexus TX 550h+ model, but the XC90 offers more advanced safety features and better cargo space behind the third row than the TX for around the same price.

Between the performance-focused Acura MDX and the luxury and efficiency-focused Volvo XC90, the Lexus TX effectively bridges performance and efficiency together into a three-row crossover where buyers can pick and choose what features and options matter more without needing to look outside the lineup. With an abundance of standard safety and convenience features and a functional third row, the 2024 TX is a worthy addition to the Lexus lineup and competitor in the mid-size SUV segment.
