All next-generation Polestar electric cars – replacing models such as the Polestar 2 sedan – will wear different names to their predecessors.

The successor to the Polestar 2 electric sedan – and any other model from the Chinese-owned, Volvo-affiliated electric-car maker – will not be known by the same name.

Polestar says starting from scratch with the name of every new model it introduces means it will not be forced to retain links to previous vehicles, which it claims will enable more innovative designs.

While the company’s models are still relatively new – its oldest still in production the Polestar 2, introduced overseas in 2020 – all modern vehicles have a ‘life cycle’, and will eventually need to be replaced by new generations.

“We will not replace a Polestar 2 with a Polestar 2. Of course it will be the Polestar 7 [or similar]. And of course we plan for a Polestar 7, but what type of car and how we do it? That is something we can discuss then when it’s time,” Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath told media including Drive’s Glenn Butler.

Asked if it means all next-generation Polestars will wear new numbers, Mr Ingenlath said: “That was the idea that we will not [directly replace a car] … a little bit as a philosophy.

“As much as we might build a very similar car … because of the different number we will not have this natural trap that you are boxed into, that core set of what the car had been.

“As nice as it is to have a Golf … it is very limiting in terms of innovative power because you’re always back in this box of what the Golf should be.

“And at some point you get into a really strange situation … when the generation gets double-digit [more than 10 generations] it gets really questionable,” said Mr Ingenlath.

The Polestar 2 is only about halfway into the typical eight-year life cycle for a European passenger vehicle, though the extent of the updates rolled out in its four years on sale overseas – including a switch from front- to rear-wheel drive – means it could live to a decade.

Speaking to select Australian media including Drive in a different roundtable interview, Graeme Lambert – global communications executive for Design, Innovation and APAC (Asia-Pacific) at Polestar – said:

“There is always a life cycle within the product planning department, for sure. It’s not my department, but yes,” the executive said, when asked if Polestar has decided on the length of the Polestar 2’s life cycle.

“I don’t think anyone is sitting here going, we can sell this indefinitely just because we can do over-the-air updates.

“We’ve talked about Polestar 6, [Polestar] 5 and 6 will come. It’s pretty clear Polestar 7 will come after that. What Polestar 7 looks like and is, we’ve not discussed. We definitely have a product cycle to consider.”

Over-the-air updates are also rolled out to Polestar vehicles – as well as related Volvo models – but Mr Lambert acknowledged an all-new model would eventually be needed.

“To your point, it is important that we can continually update and improve this car,” Mr Lambert said in an online briefing for the Polestar 4, due in Australia later this year.

“Not just … to make it attractive in the marketplace for people to buy, but the important thing is to improve it for the people that bought it in the first place and ensure that they have the best possible car they can have.”

The name given to the successor to the Polestar 2 – as well as the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUVs, which launch in Australia and Europe this year – depends on when they are launched, and how many new Polestars are introduced before them.

Unlike other brands – which assign numbers based on the sizes of each model – new Polestars will be named according to their launch order.

If the Polestar 7 proved to be a Polestar 2 replacement – and the next Polestar 3 became Polestar 8 – it would mean the Polestar 7 would be smaller than the Polestar 5 and Polestar 8, but bigger than the Polestar 4.

In February, long-time associate Volvo confirmed it would no longer provide funding to Polestar, and would sell the majority of its share in the firm to China’s Geely – the parent company of both brands.

Shortly after Polestar secured $US950 million ($AU1.46 billion) in external funding, though it is short of the $US1.3 billion ($AU2 billion) it said it would require to secure its future.

Polestar now sits on the same level as Volvo in the Geely group – rather than managed by Volvo, which is a Geely subsidiary itself – though there remain strong ties between the brands in research, development, technology and after-sales support.

In Australia, Polestars are serviced at a selection of Volvo dealers – though the vehicles are sold through stand-alone Polestar showrooms.
