Toyota Planning To Launch PHEV Models With A Long Electric Range Of Over 124 Miles

Toyota has announced plans to accelerate its electrification efforts, with a focus on electric vehicles (EVs). The company plans to launch at least 10 models without a combustion engine by 2026, including a three-row SUV for the US market set to debut in 2025. Toyota will also introduce an electric pickup truck and a compact model in Asia and emerging markets before the end of 2023.

Additionally, Toyota is developing the next generation of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with a purely electric range of over 124 miles (200 kilometers). Although the test cycle was not mentioned, the new PHEVs are expected to have a significant increase in their electric range, compared to current models.

While Toyota’s current PHEV, the Prius Prime, has a manufacturer-estimated electric range of 44 miles (nearly 71 kilometers), the next-gen PHEVs are expected to provide a significant boost in purely electric range. The company intends to reposition these new PHEVs as “practical BEVs” while improving the regular hybrids with a focus on high quality and affordable prices.

Toyota also plans to introduce next-gen battery-powered EVs starting from 2026, with twice the driving range of current models. Moreover, Toyota aims to begin mass-producing commercial fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and reduce global average CO2 emissions by 33% by the end of the decade and over 50% by 2035, compared to 2019 levels. Ultimately, Toyota aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
