A baaaaad day to be late to work: Goats’ escape causes congestion on tollway

Authorities said the goats used for landscape maintenance have been herded and safely returned to their duties, with tollway lanes re-opened.

A group of goats used for “landscape maintenance” have escaped their worksite and caused traffic delays along Melbourne’s Eastlink tollway this morning.

According to Eastlink’s post on X (formerly Twitter), the incident occurred near High Street Road in Wantirna South – a suburb approximately 25km east of Melbourne – at approximately 9:45am on 18 April 2024.

A number of posts on social media claimed traffic had been backed up along the tollroad to Ringwood as motorists slowed down for the livestock.

“It was a magical experience watching a bunch of cops desperately trying to herd goats off the road through the cars. I was super late to work but it was 100 per cent worth it,” one witness on Reddit recalled.

Since 2018, Eastlink’s landscaping team have used goats to clear invasive non-native weeds – such as blackberries – that grow in hard-to-access areas.

According to Eastlink, the goats trim the foliage and leaf buds that “exhausts the root system and kills the plant” without damaging the soil and insects.

Authorities confirmed the escaped goats were herded by team members on an embankment, with all lanes open and the landscape goats “safely back where they belong”.
