6 EK9 Honda Civic Type R

Only intended for the Japanese market, the first-generation Honda Civic Type R was a JDM-exclusive hot hatch. A year thereafter, in 1998, a Motor Sports edition Type R debuted that came with steel wheels, and the same cockpit as a base model Civic with manual windows. Other weight-saving initiatives include removing air conditioning, and the audio system too. After that, in 1999, Honda unveiled the Civic Type Rx which added creature comforts like power-retractable side mirrors, power windows, keyless entry, automatic climate control, keyless entry, and a CD audio system.

The EK9 Honda Civic Type R’s 1.6-liter four-cylinder B-Series engine was tiny and didn’t benefit from forced induction. However, the 1.6-liter four-banger produced its peak horsepower at 8,200 rpm, and revved up all the way to 8,600 rpm. 5 EP3 Honda Civic Type R

Reckoned to be one of the greatest Civic ever made, the EP3 Honda Type R had two different versions and in total, about 32,800 units sold worldwide. The European EP3 Civic Type R had many of the same performance upgrades the EK9 Type R had, while the Japanese version benefitted from a limited-slip differential, Recaro sports seats, and a more potent version of the K20 four-cylinder engine. Mid-way through its lifecycle, in 2003, the whole Civic lineup received upgraded steering and suspension, as well as a lightweight flywheel for the Euro version.

4 FN2/FD2 Honda Civic Type R

The third-generation Honda Civic came either as a hatchback, called the FN2, or a sedan, called the FD2. Japan received the FD2 sedan whereas the rest of the world received the FN2 hatchback, and in total, 13,400 sedans and hatchbacks were sold globally. Mechanically, both models were near-identical apart from having different power outputs and a few performance upgrades, except for the JDM Mugen Type R.

3 FK2 Honda Civic Type R

The FK2 Honda Civic Type R was the very first turbocharged Type R model, and is considered by many to be the best Civic Type R of them all. Despite it being the most powerful Type R model by a landslide at the time of release, Honda only sold about 7,500 examples worldwide. The FK2 Type R was built for high-speed cruising as Honda increased the Type R’s rigidity by 18% in comparison to other Honda Civics, and retuned the H-shaped torsion beam rear suspension to enhance stability at high speeds.

The FK8-generation was the very first Honda Civic Type R sold in the United States, and 21,424 units were sold in the U.S. alone.
