2025 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Drops With 805 Plug-In Hybrid Horsepower - SUV VEHICLE

2025 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Drops With 805 Plug-In Hybrid Horsepower

  • The 2025 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance combines a twin-turbo V8 with plug-in hybrid tech for 805 hp.
  • The Electric Drive Unit acts as a supercharger for the V8, resulting in the fastest AMG model yet.
  • The hybrid system allows for electric-only mode and quick acceleration, with a 0-60 MPH time of 2.7 seconds.

About four years ago, when the last-generation Mercedes-AMG GT was approaching the end of its lifestyle, I wrote a feature for Business Insider explaining how Mercedes’ halo sports car was a critical product for the brand. I also remember asking the folks at AMG where that nameplate would be heading in an electrified world, for them to tell me not to worry, that the car will continue to be an enthusiast’s dream.

Well, here we are with yet another generation of AMG’s flagship sports car. And, well, AMG was right! Even in this day and age of strict CO2 emissions, I’m happy to report that the 2025 AMG GT’s latest and most potent form still houses a twin-turbocharged V8 underneath its hood. Except this time, it’s been paired to a plug-in hybrid system to produce even more horsepower and torque, while making it the fastest AMG GT to date. What a time to be alive!

When you stop to really think about it, plug-in hybrid technology is the most realistic approach in order for Mercedes-AMG to preserve this performance GT’s character. I can’t imagine what this sports car would have felt like if it was purely electric. Frankly, if that were the case, Mercedes would be better off killing this nameplate and building something else.

So, what exactly are we talking about here? Well, still mid-mounted in the front of the car is AMG’s now well-known and hand-crafted 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8.

On its own, it’s good for 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. It sends that power to all four wheels via Mercedes’ 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, which can disengage the front axle on demand for pure, rear-wheel drive fun. A nine-speed, Speedshift multi-clutch transmission is the only gearbox offered.

Using Plug-Hybrid Technology For Improved Performance

The plug-in hybrid system – or the Electric Drive Unit (EDU) – is powered by a 6.1-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery which was installed above the car’s rear axle for optimal weight distribution. In its press release, Mercedes-AMG prides itself on the fact that this is a lightweight battery, but doesn’t give any specific weight.

That battery then powers a 201-horsepower/236 lb-ft, rear-mounted, permanently excited synchronous electric motor, bolted onto a two-speed electronic transmission and a limited-slip differential.

What you end up with is a total combined output of 805 horsepower and anywhere between 797 and – hang on tight – 1,047 lb-ft of torque! This makes it the most powerful and fastest AMG production vehicle to date, with a claimed 0-60 MPH time of 2.7 seconds.

What’s particularly interesting about AMG’s EDU, is that it essentially acts as a supercharger for the internal combustion engine (ICE). By installing the electric motor on the rear axle, it assists the ICE during hard acceleration and can even transfer some of its power to the front axle on demand through a mechanical setup comprised of a driveshaft and drive axles.

Mercedes-AMG hasn’t published an electric range just yet, because yes, the 2025 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance can run on full electric vehicle (EV) mode when it’s fully charged by way of a level 2 home charging unit. The onboard charger for home charging is rated at 3.7 kW.

Expect this AMG performance coupe to hit North American showrooms towards the end of this year. No pricing has been released just yet, but I don’t expect it to be cheap. We’ll get back to you with more information as we know more. In the meantime, TopSpeed will try to get its hands on a test unit, so we can share with you our driving impressions.
