2024 Lexus RX Hybrid: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

Lexus is owned by the Toyota Motor Corporation, and it essentially operates as the luxury brand of Toyota. This means that most Lexus models are either built on the same reliable platforms as a similar Toyota, or they’re built with many Toyota parts, both of which go a long way towards indicating how reliable they are. But Lexus is not only about reliability, the brand is truly built on luxury and innovation, and that’s where the 2024 Lexus RX Hybrid comes in.

The RX SUV has been a staple of Lexus since 1998, and it’s become one of the most popular and recognizable platforms offered by the luxury brand. To keep up with the times, and in the spirit of innovation, Lexus began offering hybrid powertrains in the RX back in 2017. Now seven years later, the hybrid options dominate their gas-guzzling counterparts in both efficiency and performance, and the new plug-in hybrid variant may just be the best Lexus RX ever built.

2024 Toyota RAV4: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, and Pricing

The current Toyota RAV4 is nearing the end of its lifespan as a new generation approaches, but it stands strong against the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-50

What’s New For 2024

Lexus brings a new model to the lineup with the RX 450h+ Plug-in Hybrid. Only offered as a luxury model, this new trim tops the list as the most expensive RX Hybrid model, and it brings with it some much-needed electric-only range that Lexus hybrid SUVs have been lacking. Outside of the new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) trim that uses the same powertrain as the popular Toyota RAV4 Prime, the 2024 models are the same as 2023.

2024 Highlights

  • 500h F Sport Performance model produces 366 horsepower

Specifications And Performance

Lexus RX Hybrid Engine Bay

The 2024 Lexus RX is offered in all kinds of trims and drivetrain configurations, but there are only three hybrid powertrains. All the RX 350h trims use a 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that is attached to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) and produces 246 horsepower and 233 pound-feet of torque. The models with this powertrain come with all-wheel drive (AWD) standard, and they can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (MPH) in 7.2-7.4 seconds.

Next up is the RX 500h F Sport Performance trim, which is the most powerful model in the lineup. Its 2.4-liter engine produces 366 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to reach 60 MPH in just 5.9 seconds through the six-speed automatic transmission. Topping the list is the RX 450h+ plug-in hybrid, which combines the same 2.5-liter engine from the 350h models with an 18.1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery. This set produces 304 horsepower and pushes the plug-in Lexus from 0 to 60 MPH in 6.2 seconds.

Despite its name and model-leading acceleration, the F Sport Performance, a trim also used on other Lexus models, doesn’t really offer that sporty feel that some enthusiasts are looking for. Due to it being a Lexus SUV, its suspension is just as soft as the other trims of the RX lineup, meaning it’s designed for comfort rather than performance and cornering. Great SUV, but it doesn’t exactly live up to the “sport” moniker.

Lexus RX Hybrid Charging Time And Range

White Lexus RX Hybrid Charging

The Lexus RX 450h+ is the only trim of the new RX Hybrid lineup that uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Its 18.1 kWh battery provides enough juice to travel up to 37 miles without using any gas, and this battery can be recharged in 2.5 hours with any standard 240-volt connection. Not quite an all-electric SUV that can go for hundreds of miles on its battery alone, but the Lexus RX 450h+ is one of the most reliable plug-in hybrid SUVs on the road today.

15 Plug-In Hybrid SUVs With The Most Electric Range

Some hybrid setups cater to performance, and others, to efficiency. Here are 15 PHEVs that focus on the latter and offer the best electric range.

Interior Technology, Luxury, And Comfort

Best Interior Features Of The 2024 Lexus RX Hybrid

  • Optional 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Wireless smartphone integration
  • Ambient lighting system
  • Roomy cargo space
  • Surround-sound stereo system

The interior of a Lexus SUV is the real moneymaker, with the RX Hybrid’s spacious interior offering all the luxury and comfort you could hope for in an SUV in this price range. All RX Hybrid trims have two rows of seating that can comfortably seat up to five adults, and the second row of seats can be laid down to offer cargo capacity that competes with some of the biggest SUVs on the market. Third-row seating is not available with the RX, so you may want to check out the new Kia EV9 if that’s a dealbreaker.

To add more luxury to the cabin, the RX Hybrid includes wood trim throughout, special color combinations and multi-tone designs, and ambient lighting that offers some real customization with higher trims. Heated and ventilated seats are optional for added comfort on long trips, and a heated steering wheel is standard. A 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound stereo system is also optional and will immerse you in whatever you’re listening to.

2024 Lexus RX Hybrid infotainment

The lower-tier trims of the RX Hybrid come standard with a 9.8-inch infotainment center touchscreen mounted in the middle of the dash. An optional 14.0-inch touchscreen can be added to any trim for $1,105 and includes a three-year subscription to Drive Connect. This infotainment touchscreen is tilted toward the driver’s seat to make it as easy as possible to use, and smartphone integration is easy with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

To take advantage of all the technology the RX Hybrid is capable of, you can add things like a head-up display, cloud navigation, a digital key, additional power outlets, and more. Keep in mind that all of these options will add cost to the already luxury price of the RX Hybrid.

Safety And Reliability

As a subsidiary of Toyota, Lexus vehicles are considered some of the safest and most reliable, and the RX Hybrid is no exception. Speaking of safety, the new Lexus RX has a perfect 5-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its hybrid trims, though oddly, the non-hybrid RX 350 only has a 4-star overall safety rating. The Lexus RX was also recently named a 2024 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), further indicating just how safe it is.

Driver Assistance Features

As a luxury SUV, the Lexus RX Hybrid comes loaded with all kinds of driver-assistance features to make it easier and safer every time you drive. These include basics like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning, along with more advanced options like a head-up display, traffic jam assist, parking assist, and more.

10 Plug-In Hybrid SUVs With Lower Reliability Scores

Plug-in hybrids offer great driveability, but here is a list of SUVs with lower-than-expected reliability.

All trims of the RX Hybrid come with the Lexus Warranty, which provides some of the best coverage of any warranty out there. The basic warranty covers everything bumper-to-bumper for 48 months/50,000 miles and the powertrain warranty lasts for 72 months/70,000 miles. Roadside assistance is included for the first 48 months with no mileage limit, and corrosion perforation is covered for 72 months.

Following in Toyota’s footsteps, all new Lexus hybrid models now come with a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty on the battery and all related electrical components, which is the best coverage of any manufacturer.

2024 Lexus RX Hybrid Versus Its Competitors

Since Lexus is owned and operated by Toyota, it makes sense to compare the RX Hybrid to the Toyota RAV4, especially the Prime trim. Anyone in the market for a hybrid Lexus SUV will have two real options to choose from: one being the RX Hybrid, and the other being the NX Hybrid, which is essentially the RX’s little brother.

How The Lexus RX Hybrid Compares To The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

  • 2024 Lexus RX Hybrid 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Model Lexus RX Hybrid Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
    Engine 2.4-liter or 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine 2.5-liter four-cylinder and three permanent-magnet motor
Transmission 6-speed automatic or eCVT eCVT
    Torque 233-406 LB-FT 163-406 LB-FT
    Driveline AWD AWD
    MSRP $52,100 – $70,580 $31,725-$47,560
Towing Capacity 3,500 Pounds 1,750-3,500 Pounds
    0-60 MPH 7.4-5.9 Seconds 7.8-5.5 Seconds
    Horsepower 246-366 HP 219-302 HP

The Lexus RX Hybrid might be one of the top luxury SUVs on the market, but the Toyota RAV4 might just be the most popular SUV ever made by the Japanese automaker. The 2024 RAV4 Hybrid is available in a bunch of different trims, but they all share the same basic 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 219 horsepower and reaches 60 MPH in 7.8 seconds, both of which fall short of the RX Hybrid. But the RAV4 Prime uses the exact same powertrain as the RX 450h+, offering identical plug-in performance.

On the inside of both SUVs, the RX Hybrid offers more luxury and amenities as expected, although the RAV4 has plenty of tech to offer, and even more cargo space than the Lexus. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two SUVs is the price tag, with the base model Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE sitting at $31,725 compared to the $52,100 starting price of the Lexus. The highest-tier RAV4 Prime XSE will set you back $47,560, but that’s a far cry less than the $70,580 price tag on the RX 450h+ with the same powertrain.

In short, if you want the added luxury, go for the Lexus. If you want much of the same performance at a lower cost, opt for the Toyota.

2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Pricing And Features By Trim Level

Available in seven trims to pick from, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid offers impressive fuel efficiency and a plethora of features.

How The Lexus RX Hybrid Compares To The Lexus NX Hybrid

  • 2024 Lexus RX Hybrid 2024 Lexus NX Hybrid
Model Lexus RX Hybrid Lexus NX Hybrid
    Engine 2.4-liter or 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine
Transmission 6-speed automatic or eCVT eCVT
    Horsepower 246-366 HP 240-304
    Driveline AWD AWD
    Range 37 Miles (RX 450h+) 37 Miles (electic-only)
    MSRP $52,100 – $70,580 $46,075-$63,380
    Charge Time 2.5 hours @ 240V 2.5 hours @ 240V
Towing Capacity 3,500 Pounds 2,000 Pounds
    0-60 MPH 7.4-5.9 Seconds 7.2-6.0 Seconds

The Lexus RX Hybrid is basically the bigger version of the NX Hybrid, with both models using identical powertrains that offer similar performance. The fastest trim for both models is the hybrid F Sport variant, with the RX taking 5.9 seconds to reach 60 MPH and the NX hitting the mark in 5.9 seconds. The plug-in hybrid versions of both SUVs use the same 2.5-liter hybrid engine, which is also the same as the RAV4 Prime, and they provide identical outputs. So in terms of performance, it’s a wash.

When you go inside both Lexus SUVs, the interiors will also be nearly identical. They offer the same driver assistance features, similar materials and accents throughout, and the same infotainment system. The only real difference is the size, with the bigger RX offering more headroom, legroom, and shoulder room. In terms of cargo capacity, the RX offers up to 29.6 cubic feet of storage in the front, whereas the more cramped NX only has 22.7 cubic feet. Interestingly, the NX actually provides slightly more space with the rear seats laid down, providing 46.9 cubic feet compared to the RX’s 46.2 cubic feet.

In short, these two Lexus SUVs are nearly identical across the board, with a few small changes here and there. If you’re okay with a bit less space in the cabin, the $46,075 starting price on the NX Hybrid might be more attractive than the higher price on the RX.

10 Things To Know About The Lexus NX Hybrid

With a highly efficient powertrain, handsome looks, and tons of technology and safety, the Lexus NX Hybrid is a jack-of-all-trades master of none.

How Much A 2024 Lexus RX Hybrid Costs
