Ford Celebrates 60 Years of Mustang By Going Retro With A New 60th Anniversary Package

Summary

  • Ford Celebrate 60 years of Mustang with a new special edition package inspired by the original 1965 model.
  • The package is only available on the GT Premium Mustang powered by the 5.0-liter V-8.
  • It’s limited to 1,965 cars to honor Mustang’s creator Lee Iacocca.

The Ford Mustang may have recently entered its seventh generation, but that hasn’t stopped the Dearborn automaker from celebrating it. The company just revealed a new celebratory 60th Anniversary Edition. The special appearance package commemorates 60 years of the Mustang, specifically paying tribute to its initial debut at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

The Ford Mustang 60th Anniversary Package takes styling inspiration from the original 1965 model-year model, including retro-themed GT fender and trunk badges modeled after the ’65 Mustang’s cloisonne insignias, vinyl striping on the lower body rocker panels, and uniquely styled 20-inch wheels. Other notable upgrades are a bespoke mesh-style grille with silver-accented “nostrils” that also aid the engine’s air intake, standard “Mustang Nite Pony” headlights with smoked-out housings, and a serialized 60th Anniversary badge for the instrument panel.

It can only be optioned on the GT Premium trim Mustang coupe and convertible with the 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 with the choice of three colors: Wimbledon White, Race Red, and Vapor Blue.

Paying Tribute To One Of Lee Iacocca’s Greatest Achievements

Available to only 1,965 cars, the Mustang 60th Anniversary Package is also a throwback to the hard efforts of the late Lee Iacocca, who conceptualized the Mustang from the get-go, which famously takes the title as the “world’s first pony car.” After only 18 months in development to meet Iacocca’s requirements for a new “small car” that could seat four with bucket seats, a floor-mounted shifter, and weigh no more than 2,500 pounds while being under 180 inches long, the Mustang was born.

Iacocca also stipulated that his new “small car” should feature a wide variety of power and comfort amenities, and other luxurious features, all for less than $2,500, or today’s equivalent to under $25,107 in today’s money. And as they say, the rest is history.

“We took inspiration from the original Mustang and applied some of the most special design elements to the latest in this limited production run,” said Ford Enthusiast Vehicles’ general manager, Matt Simpson, in a statement. “Mustang’s design DNA has never been stronger or more enduring than this multi-generational tribute.”

Order Books Open Later This Summer with Pricing To Be Announced

“The design was directly inspired by the clean silhouette of the original car,” senior designer Stefan Taylor said in a statement. “During the design process, we looked closely at the finely detailed elements of the 1965 Mustang, like the fender badges and wheel center caps. Our focus was capturing the feel of the ‘65, while also staying true to the Mustang as the modern sports car that it is.

The current generation “S650” Ford Mustang entered its seventh generation after its initial debut at the 2022 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Like previous generations, it’s available in both coupe and convertible form with the choice of a turbocharged EcoBoost inline-four as the base engine and the signature option for the more powerful 5.0-liter “Coyote” V-8, and even a more powerful “Dark Horse” edition, which pays homage to the Mustang’s long and storied history as a choice NASCAR Cup Series body. Only the GT and the Dark Horse come with the option of a six-speed manual transmission, while the base EcoBoost comes solely with a 10-speed automatic.

At the time of the announcement, Ford didn’t reveal any official pricing details for the 60th Anniversary Package. But the company said such details should be available later this year as the order books open up this summer and throughout the fourth quarter of this year.
