The car maker has allegedly contacted buyers awaiting their orders to cancel their appointments for the next seven days.

Tesla has been forced to halt deliveries of its Cybertruck after owners reported having issues with the accelerator pedal getting stuck.

On Friday, according to US publication Carscoops, buyers began to receive notifications from the electric car maker that their appointments to collect their new vehicles had been cancelled.

Reports on X, formerly known as Twitter, claim owners received a message from Tesla saying: “We need to cancel your delivery appointment… and we will reach out again when we’re able to get you back on the schedule” – but were not given a reason why.

Others said they’d been told the cancellation was due to “an unexpected delay regarding the preparation of your vehicle.”

On Saturday, the X account @WholeMarsBlog reported the automaker had cancelled all Cybertruck deliveries for seven days, with service set to resume on 20 April 2024. It also listed the accelerator as the reason for the postponement.

The fault is understood to not actually involve the pedal as such, but the aluminium plate covering it – which can allegedly slide up while the driver is using it and get itself wedged in between the pedal and the plastic bulkhead, reports The Drive.

If this happens, the cover pins the accelerator to the floor and keeps it there even when the driver takes their foot off – meaning they need to hold down the brake pedal to override it and stop the vehicle.

In January, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said wait times for the Cybertruck were shorter than previously expected, and were now thought to only extend as far as the end of 2024.

It was reported prior to the first Cybertruck deliveries last year that wait times stretched beyond four years – calculated based on the 1 million pre-orders held by the company at the time, and planned annual production of 125,000 vehicles.

Tesla executives told media and investors at the time the US electric-car giant expects to “soon sell out all of the builds in 2024”.

The US car maker has not commented on the latest news and it is not yet known how the pause on deliveries will affect wait times ongoing.
