The CBR250R was born out of a need to go up against Kawasaki’s stalwart Ninja 250 in 2011. By 2015, the CBR300R with its larger displacement 286cc engine took over to compete with the Ninja 300. One of the biggest changes between the CBR250R and 300R was the design. The former took the VFR1200F route with its clean design, but when the CBR300R switched to looking like a baby Fireblade, we’re sure it made more fans out of the styling at least. The CBR500R is the next logical step when your skills have transcended the CBR300R. It adds one more cylinder, more displacement, and 17 more horsepower, and still keeps it in a sane range for a motorcycle. Peak torque arrives at a low 6,500 RPM, meaning it is kind to the pocket and your left ankle, just like its smaller sibling. That said, its top speed isn’t significantly higher at 115 MPH, but we’re sure cruising and overtaking on the freeway is a lot less stressful thanks to the extra cubes in the motor.


The seating position is still relatively upright, the seat height is low, and the CBR500R will be nigh on unbeatable at reliability and running costs. 150 cc isn’t much in terms of engine displacement. However, the 178 cc displacement difference between the CBR500R and the CBR650R has resulted in a difference of 47 horsepower. Yes, the larger CBR produces twice as much power as the smaller one! Honda has done this with the help of four cylinders – yes, this is an inline four but tuned to be more civilized than the high-strung 600 cc track machines we are used to with this displacement and configuration.


In fact, there is no real competition for the CBR650R; Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha all prefer a parallel twin. Yes, it does cost the most among the comparable Japanese rivals, but in the CBR hierarchy, it sits comfortably between the CBR500R and the CBR600RR. So if you’re looking for Japanese reliability, and the smoothness of an inline four, but still want to retain that city sports bike feel, there is no better option.

That said, the CBR650R makes its peak power and torque a lot lower than you’d expect. This means that the engine isn’t stressed (meaning great reliability) and you will get better fuel efficiency than you’d expect from an I4. It still can get itself all the way to 149 MPH, so you shouldn’t mistake this for a slow sports bike. It is quite a big leap from the CBR500R, while still following the progression of the sports bike rider from beginner to intermediate. Oh, and occasional track days are not a problem with this either.

We’re now in the realm of serious money and serious machinery. The CBR600RR is a model with a lot of history. When it first launched in 2003, it had big shoes to fill, because of the supersport championship-winning CBR600F4i it was replacing. However, it was the first time Honda prioritized racing over street manners, and the first CBR600RR ran on tech derived from the MotoGP model of the time. It was also the first ever Honda to use the Unit Pro-Link rear suspension and modified CBR600RR engines were used in Moto2 race bikes for nearly two decades.

Given its legacy, it was a shame Honda decided to pull the plug on it for most of the world in 2019. Happily for us, it continued to sell here (even if there have been no updates). You get a screaming 599 cc engine that generates its peak power at a stratospheric 13,500 RPM, and handling that is second to none. It’s a package supersport fans will enjoy more than anything else. Aside from this, Honda has released an updated model for MY24. And it is back where it belongs – at the pointy end of the middleweight supersport segment.


The new generation has followed in the footsteps of the original and added a full suite of electronics born from MotoGP, assisted by a six-axis Bosch IMU. That means adjustability of all possible kinds. Should you want to turn it into a true track weapon, you can also purchase the optional HRC race kit, which gives you a race ECU, race exhaust, different suspension, different brake discs, a different head gasket, a new wiring loom, and a bigger radiator to cope with the extra heat. This model has yet to set foot in America, though.

It’s odd to think of a Fireblade as a ‘cheap’ CBR model, but the fact still remains that it is the fifth cheapest CBR model in its lineup. A little history lesson – this Honda superbike started off as the CBR900RR in 1998 and taught the world that a motorcycle could be quick in the corners as well as on the straights. By the seventh generation in 2004, it had grown to nearly 1000 cc and was therefore renamed the CBR1000RR.


For a long time in the past decade or two, Honda didn’t believe in the 1000 cc superbike, and the CBR1000RR languished behind its rivals in the segment.
