Here’s A Dreamy Yamaha YZF-R1 Inspired By Jonathan Rea’s Race Bike

Summary

  • Don’t miss out on the limited edition YZF-R1 with WSBK-inspired enhancements, including top-notch underpinnings and an Akrapovic exhaust.
  • Upgraded brakes, suspension, and titanium parts are all part of the package.
  • Only 65 units will on sale.

Six-time WSBK champion Jonathan Rea and Yamaha have been on opposite teams for several years. But for 2024, Rea has joined Team Blue to prove himself and fight for titles once again. Although a shocking move for many of us, the Japanese giant is happy to be associated with such a celebrated racer and it’s making sure we know that. We say this because Yamaha has just announced a limited edition YZF-R1, decked up with race-spec components inspired by the race bike ridden by Rea. Here’s what you need to know.

Diving right in, the YZF-R1 switches to new suspension, wheels, and brakes to focus on ensuring WSBK bike-like handling prowess. Gone is the stock KYB suspension and in comes Ohlins at both ends. The front has Ohlins NIX cartridge kit, along with Ohlins fork oil and springs, while the latter end has the TTX 36 monoshock. This is topped by Marchesini forged aluminum wheels, shod with Pirelli Supercorsa SP tires.

As for brakes, a Brembo master cylinder, front brake reservoir, and Ferodo brake fluid replace the stock tidbits. This, alongside the HEL Performance brake lines, should help you brake hard and late into the corners. If that doesn’t sound impressive enough, there’s an optional braking package that unlocks GP4RX calipers, T-drive discs, and a titanium fitting kit.

Like the underpinnings, the powerhouse receives upgrades, too. The 998cc, inline-four, CP4 engine breathes via a full GYTR (Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing) Akrapovic slip-on exhaust system paired with a de-cat pipe. It should take the 197 horsepower output closer to the all-important 200-HP mark. Then, you have D.I.D. ERV7 race chain and Gandini sprockets for transmitting the power efficiently. The engine also has GB Racing cases for protection if you have a fall.

Topping everything off is the bespoke aesthetic. While the fairings are stock, the fuel tank has a carbon fiber extension to mimic Rea’s race bike and provide better leg support as you hang off. The rider seat, belly pan, and tail tidy also follow the same trend, creating a super sporty aesthetic. Our favorite touch, though, is the livery. You can have this R1 in two colorways–Winter Test or Race Replica. The former takes inspiration from Rea’s pre-season race bike’s black-gray shades, while the latter has the current factory colors with the same sponsor stickers and blue wheels.

Love what you see? Then, you’d be bummed to know this is a UK-only edition. It’s built by Crescent Yamaha, home to Rea’s Pata Prometeon WSBK team. Only 65 units will go on sale, each priced at ~$37,600. A certificate of authenticity and a meet-greet with the WSBK champ is also included.
