2024 Ford Edge: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

[ad_1]

The Edge mid-size crossover is one of the many SUVs in Ford‘s loaded lineup, positioned between the compact Escape and the larger mid-size Explorer. Introduced in 2007, the Edge received a major redesign in 2015 and a slight facelift in 2019. Nine years into the second generation, the dependable SUV is due for a refresh, but doesn’t appear as dated as its age would suggest. Loaded with features and tech, the Edge also has a nice performance engine option, making it a solid mid-level entry, but not necessarily a standout in the market.

Most other automakers have added off-road packages and capabilities to their compact crossover SUVs, but with the Edge, Ford continues to promote it as a family-friendly street ride. The mid-size SUV segment is overcrowded right now, with dozens of entries, and Ford is hoping to capture a big piece of the pie with a moderately priced grocery-getter that has a little bit of a performance edge. For 2024, however, the Edge is unchanged from the previous model year, so there’s nothing new to attract buyers with this model.

The 2024 Edge is a mid-size entry in Ford’s crowded SUV lineup. With two terrific engine options, it has more than enough power for all daily driving functions or can be a high-performance ride. The roomy interior seats five adults comfortably and there is just enough luxury for a comfortable experience. With one of the smoothest rides in the segment, the Ford Edge stands out as a near-luxury SUV at a more affordable price.

What’s New For 2024?

Listing all the new features for the 2024 Edge is easy because there are none. Ford didn’t add one thing since the 2023 model, which honestly didn’t really build upon the year before that. The engines are the same, the interiors are unchanged, and they didn’t even add a new paint color or appearance package. Actually, they did extend the length of their free versions of subscription apps, like navigation, but that doesn’t exactly count as an exciting new thing for 2024.

Many other Ford models come with a wide variety of engine options, but the 2024 Edge only has two. That, however, is probably enough as the standard 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder produces 250 horsepower, which is plenty of juice for normal daily driving activities. The upgraded 2-7-liter twin-turbo V-6 cranks out 335 ponies and is for drivers looking for a bit more performance. The 2.0-liter I-4 comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.7-liter V-6 only gets seven gears, but both are operated by either a center console shift nob or steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Towing Capabilities And Payload Capacity

The Edge is not an F-250 Super Duty truck, so any expectations of mass towing power will be sadly unrealized. In fact, hoping this thing will tow at all is a major let-down, because Ford doesn’t even rate its towing or payload capacities. The only thing mentioned on their website in this regard is: “Cargo and load capacity limited by weight and weight distribution,” which probably indicates they don’t encourage pulling or hauling anything heavy with the 2024 Edge. But if we dig deeper into press materials,

Ford

Though it is called a Sports Utility Vehicle and comes standard with all-wheel drive, the 2024 Edge is not an off-roader by any stretch of the imagination. With power at all four corners, they probably do well in the rain and snow, but these vehicles were designed for street use only. Technically, they will drive on a dirt or gravel road, but sloshing through the mud or climbing over rocks is completely out of the question.

Many other makers of compact SUVs offer off-road packages and dedicated 4×4 trims, but not Ford with the Edge. The reason is quite simple, Ford makes seven different SUVs, some of which are daily drivers and others come with insane off-road capabilities. The Edge falls in the class that Ford markets to families and commuters, so there’s no reason to have a Tremor or Raptor version.

Ford has been notorious for hampering the luxury potential of their vehicles with cheap plastic interiors and the 2024 Edge barely edges away from that with a nice, but not spectacular, cabin. There is also a conspicuous lack of third-row seating, which is fairly standard on every other mid-size SUV on the market. Ford isn’t marketing the Edge as an off-road or performance vehicle, but rather a family ride, and yet it lacks one of the key components of that particular niche with fewer available seats.

The Edge interior is, however, roomy, comfortable, and practical. Good enough for hauling around a bunch of kids after soccer practice. There are plenty of cubbies throughout the cabin, and a better-than-average storage space behind the rear seats.

Safety And Reliability

The 2024 Ford Edge meets or exceeds all federal safety requirements, and it scored well in all collision tests, so it’s about as safe as a mid-size crossover SUV can be. The current generation hasn’t had any recalls or serious complaints, which is a good sign in terms of reliability. RepairPal rates the Edge above average for reliability and notes that major repairs are relatively uncommon with this model.

Driver Assistance Features

The Edge has a whole host of standard driver-assist features that fall under the umbrella of the Ford Co-Pilot360 system. This includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking as well as lane-keep assist and blind-side warning. Also available, is the Intelligent Adaptive Cruise-control, as well as lane-centering and speed sign recognition.

Warranties

The 2024 Edge comes with Ford’s standard warranty, which matches the industry standard for full coverage at three years/36,000 miles and powertrain at five years/60,000 miles. Ford bucks the trend for corrosion coverage by offering unlimited miles, as some automakers are capping that at 60,000 miles. There is no complimentary maintenance visit, however, which would have been nice.

2024 Ford Edge Versus Its Competitors

For the 2024 model year, the mid-size SUV segment is crowded, with nearly two dozen entries from nearly as many automakers. For the most part, all of these vehicles have a starting price point in the high $30,000 to low $40,000 range, so it’s a class for which fair comparisons are possible. If the Edge hopes to stand out from the pack, it has to endure match-ups against segment leaders like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Kia Telluride.

How The Ford Edge Compares To The Jeep Grand Cherokee

  • 2024 Ford Edge 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Engine 2.0-liter turbo I-4 3.6 liter pentastar V-6
    Transmission 8-speed automatic Eight-speed automatic
    Horsepower 250 hp @ 5500 rpm 293 horsepower
    Torque 280 lb-ft @ 3000 rpm 260 pound-feet
    Driveline AWD Two/four-wheel drive
    MSRP $39,960 $36,495-$71,040

At the base model, the 2024 Jeep Cherokee is a mid-size SUV with similar power and price to the 2024 Ford Edge. The Jeep, however, comes with a lot more standard features and amenities. The Cherokee, at the upper trim levels, is a legitimate luxury vehicle, while the Edge doesn’t strive for that prestige. The top-tier Edge ST trim is comparable to the Cherokee Limited Trim, but the Jeep is loaded with leather and gadgets that the Ford simply doesn’t offer.

The Edge also lacks any kind of off-road capabilities, while the Cherokee has 4×4 packages and trims that make it the master of the wilderness. The Cherokee additionally offers a plug-in hybrid version that turns it into a fuel-efficient high-performance ride, while the Edge has no hybrid engine options. The only real edge that the Edge has over the Cherokee is that the Fords come standard with all-wheel drive, while that is something optional on the Jeep.

How The Ford Edge Compares To The Kia Telluride

  • 2024 Ford Edge 2024 Kia Telluride
    Model Edge Kia Telluride
    Engine 2.0-liter turbo I-4 3.6L V-6
    Transmission 8-speed automatic 8-Speed Automatic

    Driveline AWD Front Engine, AWD
    MSRP $39,960 $36,190
    0-60 MPH 6.8 seconds 7.5 Seconds

For 2024, all Kia Telluride come equipped with the same 291-horsepower, naturally aspirated V-6 engine, with no performance upgrades available. It is a standard front-wheel drive model that offers a capable and comfortable family vehicle. At this level, the 2024 Ford Edge is comparable, and even exceeds in the performance department. The Telluride, however, is much cheaper and offers more goodies at the base-model level. Also, the Kia has three rows of seating, which the Ford lacks, making it a true mid-size SUV.

While the Edge is constrained to paved surfaces, the Telluride has optional four-wheel drive with off-road packages to tear through the muck and mud. Both vehicles have spacious interiors, but the Telluride’s cabin is more refined, and at the upper trim levels, pure luxury. The biggest advantage the Edge has is in its smooth ride, as the Telluride is a little stiff, which can result in feeling the road bumps too much. The Kia, on the other hand, blows Ford and all other automakers away with its 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

How Much Does A 2024 Ford Edge Cost?

The base-model 2024 Edge comes in at just below $40,000, which is a bit much for a mid-size SUV by today’s standards, and it’s a pretty basic set of wheels. The thing is, heading up the trim ladder doesn’t add a lot of luxury or features, which hardly justifies the added expense. The ST trim, with the 335-horsepower V-6, is a great performer, but at nearly $50,000 seems overpriced.

Fuel Economy

While not horrible, the gas mileage on both of the engines offered on the 2024 Edge is nothing to brag about. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder should do better than a combined 23 MPG, and the V-6 gets V-8 gas mileage without the added power. A hybrid option could really increase the fuel efficiency of the Edge, but sadly, is not available.

Is It Worth Buying Ford Edge?

If it seems like Ford phoned it in on the 2024 Edge, that’s because they probably did. The Edge is at the end of its cycle and there’s a very real possibility that it’s not long for this world. Ford has an insane number of SUV models and several of them overlap. The Edge, Escape, Bronco Sport, and Bronco all occupy similar territory, and should be trim levels of a single model, not four distinct vehicles.

With the 2024 Edge, $39,960 delivers a solid, reliable mid-size SUV, but for the same price, many manufacturers offer so much more. Brand loyalty and name recognition may still attract the Blue Oval faithful, but savvy consumers, doing a little research, will learn that their hard-earned dollars are going to go farther with another brand. There’s nothing inherently wrong with a 2024 Ford Edge, but there are better vehicles in the jam-packed mid-size SUV segment that are superior.
