Kia has confirmed the worst-kept secret in the Australian car industry: its first ute will be known as the Tasman.

Nearly 12 months after it was trademarked, Kia Australia has finally confirmed the name of its upcoming dual-cab diesel ute: the 2025 Kia Tasman.

The Tasman name is not a surprise, as it was repeatedly hinted at in a TV commercial earlier this year – and has been teased by Kia executives in interviews with Australian media.

It means Kia’s Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger rival will bear the name of the sea between Australia and New Zealand, itself named after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, credited as the first European to sight Tasmania.

As previously reported by Drive, the Tasman – its name confirmed on a billboard seen by Drive in Melbourne – is due to be unveiled in late 2024 ahead of Australian showroom arrivals in mid-2025.

It is due to launch with a 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, matched with an automatic transmission and selectable four-wheel drive.

Kia has identified the Ford Ranger as a key benchmark for its new ute, and is said to be targeting a 3500kg towing capacity, 1000kg payload and five-star ANCAP safety rating.
