Record deliveries of Suzuki’s fan-favourite 4WD have followed the addition of a five-door variant – but wait times still stretch up to 10 months.
The pint-sized Suzuki Jimny four-wheel drive has broken its monthly sales record as the Japanese car maker shortens its backlog of orders.
Data published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) reports 856 examples of the Jimny as sold in March 2024, beating the previous record of 748 deliveries in June 2023.
It is a near-doubling of sales compared to March 2023, and a 46.4 per cent increase in deliveries year-to-date, with 2175 reported in the first three months of 2024.
Wait times have decreased compared to their peak of 18 months for the three-door automatic, prompting a pause on orders for 10 months last year.
However its popularity means there remains an estimated wait time of eight to 10 months on a three-door automatic model – depending on the colour – a Suzuki Australia spokesperson told Drive.
Delivery is promised much sooner on the five-door, long-wheelbase Jimny XL, which attracts an estimated one to two-month wait with a manual transmission, or three to four months with an automatic, said a Suzuki Australia spokesperson.
While the three-door Suzuki Jimny is produced in Japan, the five-door Jimny XL is built on Maruti Suzuki’s production line in India.
The spokesperson cautioned wait times are expected to grow for the five-door in the second half of this year, due to “advanced shipping opportunities” in the first half of the year, and “consistently increasing sales”.
