The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R Recall Is Due To Spark Plug Issues

According to Team Green’s report to NHTSA, some examples of the Ninja ZX-4R have suffered spark plug damage during the installation process. This can result in improper idling, misfires, and even engine stalling. While riding, the latter can cause a serious crash, which is what Kawasaki is trying to avoid with this recall. Oh, and it applies to all four spark plugs.

Kawasaki Explains The Issue As:

On certain units, the spark plugs may have been damaged during the vehicle manufacturing process. It may result in unstable idle, hesitation and in the worst case, engine stalling. There is a risk that the engine may stall due to the damaged spark plugs, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chronology Of The Defect

Team Green suggests the issue first came to light in December 2023 when its Chinese subsidiary (KMSH) reported multiple rough idling instances. This was followed by an investigation headed by Kawasaki’s quality control department. In January 2024, the spark plug supplier reported they were being cracked. Finally, in February, the team found out the spark plug installation tool was the culprit. It was tilted and applied lateral force that cracked the plugs. That brings us to the recall currently underway.

Over 1,500 Units Of The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R Are Affected

  • 2024 ZX-4RR KRT: 140 units

  • 2024 ZX-4RR 40th Anniversary: 120 units

As you can see, the recall applies to both MY23 and MY24 bikes. The product dates lie between January 11, 2023 and November 14, 2023, with VIN ranges:
