Chinese brand GWM has doubled-down on discounts for the Ora electric car, and introduced a permanent price cut – with the Standard Range now just $35,990 drive-away.
Pricing for the 2024 GWM Ora hatch has been cut to just $35,990 drive-away – cementing its position as Australia’s cheapest electric car.
The Chinese car maker previously offered a limited-time deal on runout 2023-plate stock – which saw the Standard Range priced from $36,638 to $39,903 drive-away – but it was originally planned to expire in the coming months.
After Drive reported last week the discount could remain, GWM has formally cut the price – with no time expiry – and doubled-down on the savings.
Pricing for the Standard Range base model starts from $35,990 drive-away nationwide, which offers 310 kilometres of driving range from a 48kWh battery, while the Extended Range, which is capable of 420km from a 63kWh battery, now costs $40,990 drive-away.
At the top end of the range, the Ora Ultra will now set buyers back $43,990 drive-away, and the top-spec GT costs $46,990 drive-away. While the Ultra also provides 420km of claimed driving range, the GT offers 400km.
“GWM has been able to utilise continued favourable exchange rates and supply to sharpen Ora pricing and remains committed to offering an excellent combination of technology, comfort, safety and value across the entire range,” the company said in a statement today.
“The brand awareness is still something of a challenge for GWM. We are still new, and the current price we are offering is quite good,” Managing Director Charles Zhao told Drive last month.
“And with the current competition environment, we will look to keep this offer for now… I cannot say for how long.”
The Chinese car maker said it is also “studying the possibility of adding Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) models in the near future” to its Australian line-up.
The new GWM Haval H6, due here later this year, may offer plug-in hybrid power, while the boxy ‘Big Dog’ mid-size SUV may also reach local showrooms in late 2024 – but with a different name.
Between the GWM Ora, BYD Dolphin and MG 4 – all of which hail from China – the title of Australia’s cheapest electric car has changed hands multiple times over the past six months.
While it may be cheapest, it is not the top seller of the trio. In March 2024, GWM sold 96 Oras compared to 352 MG 4s and 213 BYD Dolphins.
