Introduced for the 2010 model year, the GMC Terrain was a mid-sized crossover SUV that shared a platform with the Pontiac Torrent and Chevy Equinox. That was also the final year for Pontiac, but that in no way reflects upon the quality and popularity of the vehicle. In 2018, the Terrain was re-positioned as a compact SUV, with new styling that is thankfully more bold than the monotonous conformity of most crossovers on the market. The 2024 model offers modest power that is fine for an everyday driver, but lacks any real performance options. Though it is offered in all-wheel drive, this is a paved road vehicle only.


With 88 points out of 100 from J.D. Power, the 2024 Terrain is the highest ranked GMC SUV. That rating scale goes from 0-69 for Fair, 70-80 for Average, 81-90 for Great, and 91-100 for Best, so this is a solidly reliable vehicle. Beginning as a full-size SUV in 2007, the GMC Acadia shrunk down to mid-size for its second generation in 2017. 2024 marks the third-gen Acadia with great new styling it shares with the Chevy Traverse. It is billed as a crossover, but it is simply a straight-up mid-size SUV without a hint of the glorified station wagon cues usually associated with the segment. The standard 328-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four cylinder engine actually cranks out 13 more ponies than its Chevy counterpart, and gives the Acadia plenty of zip. Four-wheel drive is available on most trims and the dedicated AT4 off-road version makes this a credible 4×4, as well as a solid family cruiser.


The 2024 GMC Acadia gets a great rating for reliability, which covers defects, malfunctions, and design flaws from the powertrain to the technology. GMC came out with the Yukon in 1991 and the full-size SUV was such a smash success that by 1994, Chevrolet had their own version of it in the Tahoe, with the luxury Cadillac Escalade coming in 1998. The fifth generation, debuting in 2021, brought some new style, while retaining the overall boxy look of the vehicle, and a few engineering tweaks increased the size of the already cavernous interior. For 2024, there are a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter and a 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 engine to choose from, as well as a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six that grinds out 460 pound-feet of torque. This is a versatile SUV that can handle all the dirty work or be a high-profile luxury ride.

4 2024 GMC Yukon XL

The GMC Yukon XL seems like it’s a trim level for the Yukon, but it’s actually its own model. While the Yukon is the same as a Chevy Tahoe, the Yukon XL is the equivalent of a Chevy Suburban. The Suburban is one of the oldest nameplates in GM history, beginning as an over-sized station wagon in 1935, before morphing into the monster SUV it is known as in 1960.

GMC used to sell their version of it as the Suburban before changing it to Yukon XL in 2000. For all intents and purposes, it is a Yukon with the same look and engine options, but the XL is just longer with 15 inches of extra overall length and 14 inches of more wheelbase.


The 2024 Yukon XL hasn’t been ranked for reliability by J.D. Power, but presumably it’s about the same as the Yukon. Then again, the yearly maintenance cost, as well as the 10-year cost, is higher with the XL. Also, the 2024 Chevrolet Suburban, which is mechanically identical to the Yukon XL, has a reliability rating of 78/100, which is a few points down from the Yukon. The XL has similar non-powertrain related issues as the Yukon, but the only real mechanical problem is a rare occurrence of engine stall due to a dirty throttle body.

Action superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger successfully lobbied to have the HUMVEE light military vehicle sold to consumers in 1992, manufactured by AM General, and in 1998 General Motors picked up the nameplate and marketed them as Hummer H2s and H3s. By 2010, the gas-guzzling behemoths were discontinued, but found new life as electric vehicles in 2022.

The GMC Hummer EV SUV is the heaviest consumer vehicle ever sold, tipping the scales at over 10,000 pounds. It is also equipped with a scary amount of power, with 625 to 830 horsepower options and a max 11,500 pound-feet of torque output. Much like the original Hummers, the EV SUV is completely unnecessary, but also incredibly cool.


Neither the Hummer EV SUV nor the truck version, from any model year, has been rated for reliability, and the probable reason for that is because J.D. Power bases their rankings on “hundreds of thousands of independent and unbiased opinions of verified car owners” while not that many people have actually purchased one of these monster electric vehicles.

Edmunds gave it a 7.9 out of 10 rating, but that was for the test drive and not the reliability. U.S. News & World Report placed it 9th out of 17 luxury SUV EVs for reliability, but that doesn’t seem to be based on any data. There isn’t any good source for reliability for this vehicle, but there also aren’t any horror stories, which probably means it’s okay.
