These are the only V8s you can buy new for under $100,000


The V8 is synonymous with Australian culture, but it seems the engine layout has fallen off the affordability scale in recent years.

A V8 is about as Australian as a kangaroo or a cold VB, but it seems the demise of the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore has also killed off the affordable V8 on the new-car market.

The used market is still bursting with examples of the big, beefy engine – led by the Holden Commodore, which was crowned one of the best-selling used cars last year. 

Before the Commodore left the Australian market, the last V8 SS was priced at $47,990 (plus on-road costs) in 2017. At the same time, a V8 Falcon XR8 started around the $53,500 (plus on-road costs) mark in 2016.

Chrysler also removed an affordable V8 model when it left the Australian market at the end of 2021. The 300 SRT was a mildly popular choice for Australians looking to purchase the closest thing they could find to a Commodore SS or Falcon XR8.

But the working-class Australian has been priced out of the market for owning a brand-new V8-powered machine, with the engine layout primarily offered in luxury and high-end models. 

It’s not all hopeless. There are still a handful (and we mean a handful) of models available for under $100,000, including a sporty offering for those looking to grab a weekend car!

Here, we round up the cheapest V8 cars, SUVs and utes you can still buy new for under $100,000 in 2024.

Ford Mustang

  • Priced from $77,002 (plus on-road costs)
  • 5.0-litre V8 making 347kW @ 7250rpm and 550Nm @ 4850rpm
  • Available in automatic and manual

The Mustang is the only V8-powered sports car you can buy in Australia for under $100,000, and it has proven a worthy replacement for the Ford Falcon XR8.

Powered by a 5.0-litre V8, the Mustang has just received a facelift for 2024 with all new styling and engine changes for the Gen-IV 5.0-litre.

Pricing starts at $77,002 (plus on-road costs) for the 5.0-litre manual fastback and $80,902 for the automatic. You can also opt for a manual or automatic convertible for under $100,000 and even the sportier, manual Mustang Dark Horse variant skims in at $99,102 before on-road costs.

This modern interpretation of the iconic nameplate produces 347kW of peak power and 550Nm of peak torque, with performance perks like Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, and selectable driving modes. 

The Mustang’s leather interior also gives its European counterparts a run for their money, and the standard kit includes a 13.2-inch head unit, 12.4-inch dash cluster, and many driving assist and safety features, such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and evasive steer assist. 

Compared to the Commodore, Falcon, and 300 SRT, the only downside of the Mustang is that it has two doors; however, it’s perfect as a weekend toy. 

Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series

  • Priced from $80,900 (plus on-road costs)
  • 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel V8 making 151kW @ 3400rpm of power and 430Nm @ 1200–3200rpm of torque
  • Available in manual only

The LandCruiser 70 Series celebrates its 40th birthday in 2024, having been in production since the first one rolled off the line in 1984.

It is still an exceptionally popular option for tradies, fleet buyers and off-roaders thanks to its twin-turbo diesel V8 that puts out an impressive 430Nm of torque, which comes mated to a manual gearbox only.

Unfortunately, 2020 saw the death of the 200 Series LandCruiser with its twin-turbo 4.5-litre diesel V8, which churned out even more torque and had the luxuries of a top-of-the-line SUV. 

Still, the LandCruiser 70 Series range has plenty of V8-powered options under the $100,000 threshold – starting with the barebones Workmate LC79 single-cab ute starting at $80,900 (plus on-road costs).

Other options include the line-topping GXL twin-cab manual that comes in at $83,900, a Troop Carrier that starts at $83,300 for the WorkMate variant, and a GXL wagon that starts at $83,900 (all prices before on-road costs).

Even on the cheapest Workmate LC79, you still get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with a 6.7-inch touchscreen display. Still, the interior is very simple. Toyota only began offering power windows from the base model Workmate and up in 2024. 

All model grades also gained the Toyota Safety Sense suite as standard, which includes a lane-departure warning, pre-collision alert, cyclist detection, and road sign assist. However, you’ll need to opt for a higher trim if you want carpet flooring. 

Nissan Patrol

  • Priced from $84,900 (plus on-road costs)
  • Powered by a 5.6-litre petrol V8 making 298kW @ 5800rpm and 560Nm @ 4000rpm
  • Available with a seven-speed automatic only

The 2024 Nissan Patrol is the closest thing you’ll get to the now-defunct 200 Series Toyota LandCruiser – a luxury V8-powered SUV for under $100K.

Unlike the 200 Series, the Patrol features a petrol V8 instead of a diesel. The 5.6-litre V8 supplies the Patrol with an impressive 298kW of power and 560Nm of torque. 

However, you’ll need to jump on one soon as it’s confirmed to be the last V8 Patrol to be made. Speaking to Australian media at the Tokyo motor show, Nissan’s global head of product strategy and planning, Ivan Espinosa, confirmed a twin-turbocharged V6 engine will power the forthcoming ‘Y63’ Nissan Patrol, signalling the end of Nissan’s V8 era.

Before the V8 Patrol is discontinued with the arrival of the 2025 model, you can still buy one in Australia for $84,900 (plus on-road costs). For this, you get an epic engine mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox, switchable 4WD modes, an electronic differential lock, and hydraulic body motion control suspension tech.

You can also score the Ti-L for $97,600, which features a more premium interior, power-operated boot, automatic headlight leveller, roof racks and a sunroof.

Other standard equipment includes a leather-accented interior, a sizeable touchscreen head unit with sat nav, intelligent cruise control, a forward collision warning, lane intervention, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. 

Ram 1500 Express

  • Priced from $98,950 (plus on-road costs)
  • Powered by a 5.7-litre Hemi V8 making 291kW @ 5600rpm of power and 556Nm @ 3950rpm of torque
  • Available with an eight-speed automatic transmission only

Most of Ram’s Australian range is above the $100,000 threshold, but the 1500 Express just slots in at $98,950 (plus on-road costs).

Equipped with the petrol 5.7-litre Hemi V8 and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the Ram 1500 Express develops a whopping 291kW of power and 556Nm of torque. 

The Express is the entry-level model, sporting a cloth interior, the pre-facelift front end and smaller alloy wheels, but it still offers an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

The Express also eliminates most of the driver assistance found on the higher trim levels, but still has a reverse-view camera, tyre pressure monitoring, and cruise control.
