2024 Genesis Electrified GV70: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

The Genesis Electrified GV70 enters its second year of production as a fully electric alternative to the premium compact GV70 SUV range. This model doesn’t use the Hyundai Group’s E-GMP platform, but it is based on the very similar M3 chassis, granting it the ability to accommodate the conglomerate’s EV mechanical components without much compromise. Genesis keeps its premium EV offering very concentrated by only offering it with one drivetrain configuration and two trim groups.

In total, the brand only sold 6,403 EV units in 2023, of which the GV70 contributed 1,674 units. This is not a spectacular result when looking at the entire EV industry, but it’s not a bad performance for an all-new premium electric model. There’s no doubt that Genesis plans to more aggressively market this appealing SUV, despite not handing it many alterations for 2024.

Genesis Electrified GV70

The Genesis Electrified GV70 is an all-electric crossover based on the brand’s compact model line. It’s only available with one dual-motor all-wheel drive option, producing 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. You can select from two specification groups, namely the Advanced and Prestige trims, with prices starting at $66,450. Genesis fits the model with its compact 77.4 kWh battery, resulting in an EPA-estimated 236-mile range claim.

Specifications And Performance

The Electrified GV70 is only available with the Hyundai Group’s dual-permanent-magnet motor configuration, powering all wheels with 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. When using the special Boost mode, power temporarily increases to 483 horsepower, resulting in a claimed 4.2-second 0-60 MPH time. Independent tests indicate that you can easily get this down to 3.8 seconds. Genesis limits the top speed to a modest 146 MPH.

The benefit of the B3 chassis means that the Electrified GV70 rides on a well-tuned and refined front MacPherson strut and rear multilink suspension, granting it a good balance between comfort and athleticism.

Genesis fits the Electrified GV70 with a set of 14.2-inch front Monobloc and 13.6-inch rear rotors for enhanced stopping power. The result is a 118-feet stopping distance from 60 MPH, which is just a few feet better than the lighter V-6 GV70. On the consumption front, the EV GV70 is fairly frugal, as the EPA estimates it consumes 91 MPGe in its combined cycle.

2024 Genesis Electrified GV70 Versus Its Competitors

The GV70 Electrified competes in a niche but aggressive segment, being the compact EV SUV market, where it has to fend off cars like the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQE, among other compelling premium examples from prestigious brands.

The BMW iX xDrive50 is the closest-matched specification for the GV70 Electrified, with its 516-horsepower dual-motor configuration. Despite its higher power output, it struggles with a lower claimed 0-60 MPH time. The South Korean option also benefits from a better energy consumption estimate, but the BMW’s bigger battery means it can cover much greater distances.

Unfortunately for the BMW, it’s just a far more expensive product, but critics argue it benefits from slightly better-perceived quality, even though its design isn’t as appealing as the Genesis. BMW’s starting price is also a bit deceiving, because it doesn’t feature as many standard features as the GV70 Electrified, particularly when looking at its advanced driver assist systems suite. The iX essentially appeals to those who don’t mind spending more for better performance, but the Genesis ultimately provides much better value.

The EQE SUV may seem like an obscure option in the premium EV SUV arena, but it has some noteworthy traits on paper. The EQE 500 model competes with the Genesis Electrified GV70 , with its 400-horsepower output, which still isn’t enough to beat the South Korean model’s 0-60 MPH time. Its 250-mile EPA-estimated range on a single charge also isn’t that impressive considering its battery pack is substantially larger.

On the pricing front, the EQE SUV range doesn’t get any more appealing, as it is more expensive by a large margin and features a far shorter standard equipment list. The EQE SUV doesn’t appropriately match up well against any SUV in this segment, let alone the compelling Electrified GV70.

Is It Worth Buying The Genesis Electrified GV70?

2023 White Genesis Electrified GV70
Genesis

The Electrified GV70 lacks some key attributes needed to be a segment leader. A poor battery range is its biggest weakness and will seriously limit users who frequent long-distance travel. Other than this, it excels at being a plush, attractive, and luxurious electric crossover with a fairly competitive starting price and an expansive standard features list. The GV70 isn’t a big seller for the South Korean brand, primarily because it is a fairly new product and the segment is aggressively competitive.

This is an EV that perfectly caters to the consumer who wants an understated and eco-friendly SUV that doesn’t compromise on comfort, luxury, and exclusivity. Unfortunately, the Hyundai Group is going to need to rapidly expand its battery technology if it hopes to make a dent in the more premium electric car segments.
