Get Ready For BMW’s R 12 GS Enduro Bike

Not long ago, BMW unveiled the new-for-2024 R 12 nineT. It took over from the R nineT, serving as the company’s new flagship retro naked. Now, it looks like the R 12 lineup is set to grow soon. That too, with an enduro-type off-road-biased scrambler; let’s call it the R 12 GS. The confirmation comes straight from the company’s head honcho and spy shots from its hometown.

According to Markus Flasch (head of BMW Motorrad), the Bavarian giant is readying an off-road-specific R 12 model. It will be a successor of BMW’s previous two enduro bikes, the R nineT Urban G/S and the iconic HP2 Enduro. It’s a move that makes a lot of sense since the off-roading motorcycle market is soaring in popularity nowadays.

No, we don’t mean adventure bikes; we’re referring to stripped-back bikes with bare-minimum bodywork and a light heft. Such bikes can do anything from city stints, highway touring, and most importantly, charting through tight trails while easy to control, unlike ADV heavyweights. A prime example would be the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled.

The Upcoming BMW R 12 GS Has Already Been Spotted Testing

What all will the R 12 GS pack, you ask? The answer comes from the GS’ test mule seen back in 2021. At the time, the spy shots made little sense as BMW already had the R nineT Urban G/S in its lineup. But with Flasch’s latest comments, it’s a no-brainer that the test mule could very well be the upcoming GS. Of course, the launch timeline still remains unclear.

Coming to the details, the key changes come to the underpinnings. Unlike the standard R 12 nineT, the GS test mule rides on a large 21-inch front wheel. This, paired with uber-long-travel USD forks, gives the enduro bike an extremely tall stance and oodles of ground clearance. Oh, and the spoke wheels are shod with knobby tires, unlike the standard model’s alloys and road-spec tires.

The same trend follows in the ergonomics department. We can spot a wider, taller handlebar than the NineT, partnered with a rally-style flat saddle and toothed pegs. The cockpit, meanwhile, has a single-pod semi-digital instrument cluster. As for design, a motocross-like fender is clearly visible and so is an LED headlight reminiscent of the R 12 nineT. The tank shape is also identical.

Finally, the centerpiece of all this is the boxer engine. The casing matches the R 12’s powerhouse, meaning this would have the same 1,170cc, air-cooled mill. This is good for 109 horsepower, which would be more than enough for some serious fun on the trails. Another lifesaver would be the shaft-drive outback. It’s more hassle-free than cleaning muck from chains and sprockets.
