Electric Toyota HiLux ute confirmed, production near – report

A senior executive has confirmed an electric version of the popular HiLux ute is in the pipeline. However it may just be a ramp-up in production of the same single-cab, short-range concept we’ve already seen.

Australian buyers could eventually have the option to buy a 2026 Toyota HiLux EV ute powered by batteries.

The president of Toyota’s Thailand business – which manufactures HiLux utes for the Australian market – confirmed to media the company had plans to produce an electric HiLux, news outlet Reuters reports.

However it is not clear if it is a mass-production version of the single-cab, short-range HiLux Revo BEV concept displayed in Australia last year – which was previously confirmed to be used in a limited trial in Thailand – or a long-range, dual-cab, four-wheel-drive vehicle.

It was previously believed an electric Toyota HiLux with the same driving range, towing and payload capabilities as today’s diesel model – if not at the same time, and for an affordable price – is some time away, and relies on improvements in battery technology.

Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Sean Hanley told local media last year the company would “definitely pursue the opportunity” to bring a production version of the HiLux Revo BEV to Australia – though it would be more interested in a long-range, dual-cab version.

The latest comments reported by Reuters were made at the Bangkok motor show in Thailand, where rival Isuzu unveiled its electric D-Max to the public. Australia’s three most popular utes – the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and the Isuzu D-Max – are all made in Thailand.

While the manufacturing location of the electric HiLux wasn’t mentioned, Toyota Thailand boss Noriaki Yamashita confirmed the vehicle could be in production by late 2025.

It’s understood Toyota will be delivering a dozen electric HiLux utes to the beach town of Pattaya next month to be used in trials for public transport.

“Maybe in the coming months, there will be a more concrete roll-out of alternative powertrains for HiLux. But currently we still have to go with the [petrol or diesel] engine [to retain towing, payload, driving range]. It is a first, small step,” Kwinten Sijs, senior manager for product marketing at Toyota Professional, told UK magazine Autocar in December 2023.

As reported by Drive in February 2024, Toyota engineers in the US have been seen benchmarking a Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, and a GMC Hummer EV – all electric models – suggesting Toyota may also be working on an electric version of the large Tundra pick-up.
