Fisker-Nissan Partnership Not Happening After All

  • Fisker Inc. could potentially face bankruptcy despite reports of potential partnerships with large-scale carmakers.
  • Nissan has confirmed that it will not provide financial assistance to Fisker Inc. due to its own internal challenges.
  • Fisker Inc. must now urgently raise capital to avoid bankruptcy, as its shares have plummeted and production has been halted.

We recently reported that Fisker Inc., the upstart electric vehicle (EV) carmaker behind the Ocean compact premium crossover, could soon file for bankruptcy.

However, in that piece, we also reported that all hope wasn’t lost for ex-BMW and Aston Martin designer Henrik Fisker. A potential outcome for Fisker Inc.’s faith could have been a deal with a large-scale carmaker to help it alleviate production costs of its Alaska pickup truck.

Such a merger would also have helped cash-stripped Fisker emerge from startup status and finally expand into a full-scale carmaker. Reliable sources even alluded to the fact that Fisker Inc. was apparently in advanced talks with Nissan for a possible joint-venture.

But a recent report from Automotive News, who apparently spoke directly with an anonymous top-level official at Nissan, confirmed that no, Fisker Inc. will not receive financial aid from Nissan after all. As I write this, all talks about a potential transaction between both parties have halted.

The Fisker Ocean Isn’t Quite As Efficient As You Might Think

Although the all-new Fisker Ocean SUV is pretty to look at, here’s why we have an issue with its efficiency.

Nissan Not In A Position To Lend A Helping Hand

According to our source, Nissan is currently undergoing too much change in its supply chains and manufacturing strategies to invest in such a risky merger. The carmaker has more pressing issues at hand, such as improving the efficiency of its own suppliers in order to remain competitive in the EV era.

Fisker had apparently seized an opportunity from Nissan’s interest in creating mergers with other carmakers as a way to resist an incoming onslaught of affordable EVs, especially from Chinese carmakers. Nissan ended up partnering with Honda. The source Automotive News interviewed apparently say that Nissan had reservations about a possible tie-up with Fisker.

Raise Capital, Or Declare Bankruptcy

So, what next for Fisker Inc.? It definitely doesn’t help that its shares just tanked 29%, down to 8 cents. This is a bad to worse scenario for Fisker, as its shares have lost more than 90% of their value this year. Trading has therefore been halted pending an announcement from the company. So is Ocean production at Magna in Austria, until further notice.

Fisker Inc. is now in a do-or-die situation. If it doesn’t secure capital, and fast, the only other options are in-or out-of-court restructurings, and capital markets transactions. Fisker also plans on asking investors to vote on a proposal for a reverse stock split at a shareholder meeting scheduled on April 24. We’ll keep following the Fisker saga closely and we’ll update you as we know more.
