2024 Polestar 2: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

[ad_1]

The Polestar 2 is a premium Swedish electric crossover with sedan-like body proportions, making it a unique proposition in the mid-size segment. The model falls under Volvo’s EV-dedicated subsidiary, which was once known for elevating the brand’s ICE products to motorsport-level performance. Now that the firm has switched focus, the result is a clinical and relatively accessible electric car option.

The Polestar 2 competes in the very aggressive midsize EV crossover segment. Thus far, Polestar hasn’t been enjoying the success it anticipated in the American market, as the Tesla Model Y continues to reign supreme. Regardless, the Swedish EV maker continues to put up a fight, with its entry-level option remaining its main contender, with some new models in the line-up ready to bolster overall sales.

2024 Polestar 2

The Polestar 2 is the Swedish EV manufacturer’s entry-level electric car offering. Design-wise, it takes the form of a crossover with sedan proportions, making it a fairly unique option in the segment. Polestar offers a choice of a base rear-wheel drive single-motor or Performance dual-motor all-wheel drive variant, with power outputs ranging between 299 and 455 horsepower.

The 2024 Polestar 2 Dual Motor Performance Drives Like A Volvo S60R From The Future

The Polestar 2 Dual Motor doesn’t yet dance like a German sports sedan, but it’s just as quirky as the great Swedish performance machines of yore.

What’s New For 2024

For 2024, Polestar introduces a larger battery and updated hardware, resulting in higher EPA range estimates. The single-motor model is now rear-wheel drive, as opposed to the pre-updated model’s front-wheel drive configuration. Its estimated range increases by 30 miles on a single charge, resulting in a 320-mile range estimate. The dual-motor models also get a boost, with a range of 276 miles, up 16 miles from last year.

Along with this, Polestar kits the range out with a slight bump in power. The single-motor model now has 295 horsepower, up from 231, and the dual-motor model has been bumped up to 416 horsepower, from 408. Plus, Polestar has tweaked the torque ratio to give the rear motor more power. The 20-inch wheels that come with the $5,500 Performance Pack have been updated, and you can now opt for Michelin all-season tires on the 19-inch wheels. The larger battery now supports superfast DC charging speeds of up to 205 kW, up from the previous 155 kW figure.

2024 Highlights

  • New rear-wheel drive single-motor configuration
  • Increased battery capacity
  • New 20-inch wheels for the Performance Pack
  • Tweaked rear-motor torque ratio
  • Optional 19-inch Michelin all-season tires

The new base rear-wheel drive configuration produces a modest 299 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque from a single-permanent-magnet motor. The result is a claimed 5.9-second 0-60 MPH time, but independent tests reveal that the new model is in fact way faster than claimed, with a 5.3-second 0-60 MPH result. The base trim comes standard with front and rear ventilated brake discs and two-piston calipers.

The dual-motor configuration produces 421 horsepower and 546 pound-feet, granting it a 4.3-second 0-60 MPH time. If you specify the Performance package, this increases to 455 horsepower, lowering the claimed acceleration time to 4.0 seconds. All three derivatives feature the same limited 127 MPH top speed. This Performance package also includes Swedish gold Brembo four-piston fixed aluminum front calipers with drilled ventilated discs, a Polestar Engineered performance chassis, and Öhlins Dual Flow Valve manually adjustable dampers with 22 settings.

All Dual-Motor Polestar 2 derivatives feature the same lithium-ion battery pack with 75 kWh of usable energy. The base Polestar 2 introduces the all-new 79 kWh battery. With the standard 19-inch wheels, it is the most efficient model, as it returns a 115 MPGe combined energy consumption result, but this worsens to 111 MPGe if you fit the optional 20-inch wheels. The dual-motor with 19-inch wheels returns a 106 MPGe estimate on the 19-inch wheels and 102 MPGe on 20-inch wheels. The Performance package returns the worst figure, with a 95 MPGe estimate.

Towing and Payload Capacities

Polestar limits all derivatives to a 2,000-pound towing and 925-pound payload capacity. You have to spend an extra $1,300 on the tow-bar hitch and four-pin connector. This is a semi-electrical tow-bar, which unfolds via a button located in the trunk. You then have to manually lock it into place beneath the rear bumper. There’s a light on the button which indicates the locked status, and a message is shown in the center display if it’s unlocked. Polestar 2 Charging Time And Range

The Performance package is the least-efficient model, with a 247-mile estimate from the EPA. The most efficient model is the base rear-wheel drive option, returning a 320-mile estimate. The similar battery capacities mean that all three derivatives are subject to the same charging times.

A Level One household plug replenishes the battery in 72 hours. You can cut this down to eight hours by using a Level Two system rated at 48 amps. The new 205 kW fast charging system recovers the new battery from 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes when using a Level Three DC fast charging system. Polestar still limits the old battery to 155 kW, so you have to wait 35 minutes for it to charge from 10 to 80 percent.

The Polestar 2 comes standard with a one-phase AC charging cable, which you can use at home or at public charging points. Polestar doesn’t offer Level Two-rated chargers, so you’ll have to source them from a reputable supplier, which can cost about $200. We also recommend getting a Level Two wallbox for convenience. These usually cost around $800, excluding the cost of installation, which can be $800 to $2,000, depending on your location.

Like its parent company, Polestar benefits from some of the best standard active and passive safety features. Protective safety measures include a nine-airbag configuration covering the front driver, passenger, and knees, sides, inner-sides, and curtains. Polestar adopts a Boron steel safety cage with mixed-material crumple zones, a collapsible steering column, and other key safety features, earning it an impressive five-star overall safety score from the NHTSA. The IIHS has not crash-tested the Polestar 2 range.

On the reliability front, the Polestar 2 has held up pretty well so far, as there are no active recalls currently listed for the range. J.D. Power grants the model a Fair 64/100 score for quality and reliability.

Driver Assistance Features

Polestar kits the 2 out with a comprehensive advanced driver assistance suite, consisting of 22 unique features if you specify the optional $2,000 Pilot Pack. 2024 Polestar 2 Versus Its Competitors

The Polestar competes in the increasingly competitive midsize EV crossover segment. Its main rivals are undoubtedly the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5, which are two examples that are currently dominating the popular field.

How The Polestar 2 Compares To The Tesla Model Y

  • 2024 Polestar 2 2024 Tesla Model Y

    Charge Time 8 Hours @ 240V 8-10 hours @ 240V
    0-60 MPH 5.9-4.1 seconds 6.6-3.5 seconds

Even with the revised motor configuration and new battery options, the Polestar 2 struggles to put up a convincing fight against the Tesla Model Y. The base model just about bests the American EV’s power output figures, giving it a bit of an edge in the 0-60 MPH acceleration sprint. The top-of-the-range Performance models are also equally matched in power, but the Polestar benefits from much more torque. Despite this, the Model Y still maintains an exemplary 0-60 MPH sprint time.

Range and consumption figures are also within the same region, but the Model Y ultimately bests the Polestar 2 across all trims. It’s able to do all of this while still being around $6,000 cheaper, but the Swedish model does benefit from a slightly higher standard specification level. Its catalog also has more interior and exterior colors and shades, affording it a more unique personality.

    0-60 MPH 5.9-4.1 seconds 7.4-4.5 seconds

Polestar puts up more of a fight against the Hyundai Ioniq 5 on the performance front. Its base rear-wheel drive model outperforms the South Korean competitor with the standard and extended battery packs, resulting in a significantly faster 0-60 MPH time. The Performance derivative, on the other hand, doesn’t quite match the Ioniq 5 N’s intense performance car capabilities.

The Polestar 2 and Ioniq 5 combined energy consumption figures are in the same region, but the Swede’s bigger battery pack options means it covers longer distances on a single charge. The Polestar’s biggest challenge is competing with Hyundai’s pricing, but again, its standard specification list is far more comprehensive.
