GWM Ora electric hatch could remain Australia’s cheapest electric car


The battle for crown of ‘Australia’s cheapest electric car’ looks to continue, as GWM ponders keeping it’s discount pricing for the Ora.

The GWM Ora – an electric hatch with funky styling from the Chinese car brand – could hang onto reduced pricing for an extended period, according a local executive.

GWM is currently offering a sharp drive-away deal on runout 2023-plate stock of the Ora electric car, which shaves $4000 off the asking price and makes the Ora currently Australia’s most affordable electric car.

Between the GWM Ora, BYD Dolphin and MG 4 – all of which hail from China – the title of Australia’s cheapest electric car has changed hands multiple times over the past six months.

When asked whether the current discounts for the Ora electric car could remain permanent in order to garner more market share, GWM Australia’s Managing Director Charles Zhao said “it all depends upon the competition.”

“The brand awareness is still something of a challenge for GWM. We are still new, and the current price we are offering is quite good.” Mr Zhao said.

“And with the current competition environment, we will look to keep this offer for now… I cannot say for how long.”

Mr Zhao did not offer a deadline of expiry for the current offer.

The GWM Ora is currently priced from $36,638 to $39,003 drive-away, which represents a reduction of $4000 over pricing that was set in mid-2023.

The GWM Ora range starts with a 48kWh battery pack, which delivers a claimed range of 310km between recharges (according to WLTP testing).

Higher grades get a larger 63kWh battery, which nets a claimed range of 420km on the same WLTP cycle.

The GWM Ora is currently being outsold by the BYD Dolphin and MG 4, the latter of which is leading the charge with 983 sales in the first two months of 2024. The BYD Dolphin accrued 475 sales in the same period, while the GWM Ora managed 186 sales so far in 2024.

The BYD Dolphin range starts with a 44.9kWh battery pack and a claimed range of 340km, while a larger 60.48kWh battery increases the driving range to 427km. Motor outputs are also increased significantly from 70kW/180Nm 150kW/310Nm.

The MG4 is the only rear-wheel-drive vehicle in the trio, with a line-up that starts with a 51kWh battery for 350 kilometres of driving range. Mid-spec models get a 64kWh battery for 450 kilometres of claimed range, while a long-range 77kWh model gets a claim of 530km between recharges.

Depending on your battery size, the MG 4 has outputs that range from 125kW/250Nm (for the 51kWh battery), 150kW/250Nm (63kWh) and 180kW/350Nm (77kWh). Buyers can also consider the potent X-Power, with 320kW and 600Nm available.

Conversely, all variants of the GWM Ora share the same 126kW/250Nm electric motor at the front wheels.
