China’s MG has delivered what’s believed to be the largest-ever price cut for an electric car in Australia with the return of nationwide drive-away prices for the MG 4 and ZS EV.
The electric-car price war between Chinese brands MG, BYD and GWM has taken another turn with price cuts of up to $10,084 – or 18 per cent – for the MG 4 and ZS EV electric cars.
MG has reversed a decision implemented at the start of 2023 which saw drive-away prices of its electric cars vary based on differing government charges in each state and territory – rather than offer one price applicable nationwide, as with petrol and hybrid MG models.
In effect from Friday 22 March 2024, the drive-away prices for the MG 4 and ZS EV now either match their previous RRPs – meaning on-road costs have been wiped – or are up to $5000 lower.
Comparing new to old drive-away prices, the savings range from $1297 on an MG 4 Excite 51, Excite 64 or ZS EV Excite registered in the ACT – to $10,084 for a ZS EV Long Range registered in Western Australia.
Drive has contacted MG Australia to confirm how the price changes will be applied to buyers waiting in the queue for an electric MG – and if there will be any compensation for those who just took delivery, or have paid in full for their vehicle but have not taken delivery.
After a $1000 price rise earlier this year, the base-model MG 4 hatch is now cheaper in most states and territories than the BYD Dolphin, which was previously Australia’s most affordable electric car – excluding a special offer for the GWM Ora.
The cheapest MG 4 is now price-matched by the entry-level ZS EV, which has a drive-away price $2000 lower than its previous RRP (before on-road costs), at $39,990.
It is the fifth price change for the ZS EV since the start of 2023 – and the third cut since mid-2023 – as sales continue to slump amid the arrival of newer competitors.
Compared to its price 12 months ago, the ZS EV is between $6205 and $14,377 cheaper.
