New ute from China arrives

Chinese car maker JAC is back in Australia after a brief stint selling trucks a decade ago, but this time is bringing a new dual-cab four-wheel-drive ute to battle against GWM, LDV and SsangYong.

  • 2024 JAC T9 pricing and specifications
  • 125kW/410Nm 2.0-litre diesel, eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox
  • 1000kg payload, and 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity
  • Priced from $42,662 before on-road costs

The latest ute from China – the 2024 JAC T9 – has arrived in Australia

The T9 is a new ute from long-standing Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer JAC, which recently returned to Australia with electric trucks – after a brief, but unsuccessful stint about a decade ago with diesel trucks.

The JAC ute is imported and distributed by newcomer LTS Auto – previously referred to as BLK Auto – with a network of 50 dealerships covering all states and territories except the Northern Territory.

There are two specification levels to choose from – Oasis, priced from $42,662 plus on-road costs, and Haven, priced from $45,630 plus on-road costs.

The entry-level model is estimated to translate to about $46,000 drive-away – which would make it dearer than a high-specification GWM Ute Cannon-X ($41,490 drive-away) or LDV T60 Max Luxe ($45,884 drive-away.

Both JAC T9 variants are powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic gearbox. Peak outputs are 125kW and 410Nm, running through a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case and locking rear differential.

Much of the equipment is shared between the two models, with things like a 10.4-inch infotainment display, LED lighting, single-zone climate control and 18-inch alloy wheels being standard. Levels of safety equipment are high, as well.

Both models get a 1000kg payload, along with a 3500kg braked towing capacity. The JAC T9 uses leaf springs and disc brakes at the rear, along with strut-based independent front suspension with coil springs.

In terms of dimensions, the JAC T9 is longer, taller and wider than a Toyota HiLux, but not as long as a Ford Ranger. The 3110mm wheelbase also sits between the HiLux and Ranger, in terms of length.

The 2024 JAC T9 is rolling into showrooms around the country from in March and April, with dealers currently taking orders.
