Update: ‘Specifications,’ ‘Release Date,’ and ‘Price’ sections updated.

Jeep’s plan to fully electrify its U.S. portfolio by 2025 will lead to the launch of a Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4xe, Christian Meunier, the former CEO of the Stellantis-owned global sport utility brand, revealed at 2022 Jeep 4xe Day on September 8, 2022.

Jeep intends to launch 5 new or revised models in the U.S. in 2025. While details of all the launches have not been provided, the Grand Wagoneer 4xe is expected to be among the new high-end offerings. Here’s what we know about the full-size future plug-in hybrid SUV.

Design

Jeep will employ special blue design cues to give the Grand Wagoneer 4xe a distinctive styling. Teasers have revealed blue tow hooks and a blue “e” on the charge port cover, and we expect a “4xe” badge with the “e” in blue on the tailgate as well. The charge port cover will be located on the left front fender, which would make nose-in parking at charging locations convenient. The company won’t overdo the badges and accents, as that could affect the model’s sophisticated character.

Specifications

Specifications of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4xe have not been disclosed. Jim Morrison, the senior vice president and head of the brand in North America, however, has indicated something about its range capability.

“With an estimated combined range of over 500 miles, this vehicle is being designed to drive you the distance from New York (City), New York, to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with only one initial charge,” Morrison said while offering a look at the familiar exterior of the Grand Wagoneer 4xe.

We think that the powertrain could be similar to the new Ram 1500 Ramcharger. The pickup truck uses a dual-motor setup (250 kW front and 238 kW rear electric motors), which is powered by a 92 kWh battery pack charged using a 130 kW V6 gas engine. In this setup, the engine serves as a generator to charge the battery without directly driving the wheels, offering a total range of 690 miles. Combined, the system develops 663 hp and 615 lb.-ft. of torque.

We’re expecting the Grand Wagoneer 4xe to be the quickest model in its lineup and also have impressive towing capability.

Release Date

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4xe will arrive in U.S. dealers in 2024, Meunier said at the 2022 Jeep 4xe day. However, in the UAW Stellantis hourly agreement document (Nov 2023) which is floating on the web, the ‘Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer (WS) REPB STLA Frame’ is to enter production in 2025 at the Warren Truck Assembly plant which makes the combustion-powered variants.

‘REPB’ is the abbreviation of Range Electric Paradigm Breaker, which is the range-extender model (similar to the Ram 1500 Ramcharger) where a combustion engine charges a large battery pack which motors the wheels. There is no mechanical link between the engine and the wheels.

Going by the UAW report, the Grand Wagoneer 4xe could be revealed next year with order books opening soon after. It is likely that the Wagoneer gains this type of electrification around the same time as the flagship.

Soaring demand for its existing plug-in hybrid models should have given Jeep enough confidence to release a Jeep Wagoneer 4xe. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe are the two best-selling plug-in hybrid models in the U.S. In 2023, 67,429 (43%) of the total Wrangler sales (156,581 units) came from the Wrangler 4xe. The Grand Cherokee 4xe took the second spot, recording 45,684 units, which was 19% of total Grand Cherokee sales (244,594 units).

Price

Priced from USD 62,945 and USD 92,540, respectively, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are among the most expensive models in the Jeep range. The base Grand Wagoneer PHEV should cost well over USD 100,000.

TopElectricSUV says

Jeep’s plug-in hybrid technology has been well-received by American customers, with the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe ranking among the top-selling vehicles of this powertrain type. And it was only a matter of time before more models received it. The Grand Wagoneer is loaded with luxury features, but on the powertrain front, it settles for mild-hybrid technology. Installing a plug-in hybrid system in the full-size SUV will benefit eco-friendliness, enhance passenger comfort, and lower running costs.

For customers who intend to take it off the beaten path, 4xe would enable silent and more capable off-roading, without range anxiety. Further electrifying the bulkiest Jeeps in the range would ensure compliance with future emission norms.
