2024 Audi Q6 E-Tron electric SUV unveiled, confirmed for Australia


After years of delays, Audi’s Tesla Model Y rival has been unveiled, with up to 625km of claimed driving range, futuristic OLED lights, and a three-screen interior.

The 2024 Audi Q6 E-Tron electric mid-size SUV has been revealed with up to 625km of claimed driving range, ahead of European showroom arrivals later this year.

The Q6 is up to two years late due to unprecedented delays with its electric-car platform and software, twinned under the skin with the Porsche Macan Electric on a new ‘PPE’ architecture co-developed by Audi and Porsche.

Australian showroom arrivals have been confirmed, but timing is yet to be announced.

In the UK the cheapest Q6 E-Tron is 30 per cent more expensive than an all-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y Long Range – and the SQ6 performance variant is nearly twice the price.

Two versions of the five-seat Q6 E-Tron will be available initially, both powered by dual electric motors with all-wheel drive, and a 94.9kWh battery pack (net capacity, or 100kWh gross).

The regular Q6 E-Tron Quattro claims 285kW, 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds and a 210km/h top speed, while the high-performance SQ6 E-Tron Quattro quotes up to 380kW in boost mode, 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds, and a 230km/h top speed.

It compares to 300kW/650Nm for the electric Macan 4, and 470kW/1130Nm from the electric Macan Turbo, the latter capable of 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.3 seconds.”

Driving range is claimed as up to 625km for the regular Q6, and 598km for the SQ6, with new-generation electric motors alone attributed to a 40km range boost compared to previous designs in earlier electric cars, while being lighter and smaller.

Two rear-wheel-drive models are due later, one with a smaller 83kWh (gross) battery pack – and another with the 94.9kWh battery and “a significantly greater range compared to the models offered at market launch.”

The PPE architecture runs 800-volt technology, with DC fast charging at up to 270kW for a 10 to 80 per cent recharge in a claimed 21 minutes on a compatible plug.

If the car connects to a fast-charging station that runs at 400 volts, Audi says the Q6 E-Tron supports ‘bank charging’ – so the 800-volt battery is “automatically divided into two batteries at equal voltage, which can then be charged in parallel with up to 135kW.”

AC home charging is available. The regenerative braking system can recoup energy at up to 220kW under braking.

Measuring 4771mm long, 1993mm wide and 1648mm tall, on a 2899mm wheelbase, the Q6 E-Tron is 89mm longer nose to tail, 100mm wider, and 67mm longer in wheelbase than a petrol Q5, but 15mm lower.

It wears Audi’s latest styling language, with large front air intakes, crease lines over the wheel arches, and a closed-off front grille.

The split LED headlights are claimed to be “the world’s first active digital light signature,” with rows of dimmable light elements which can be customised to show eight different signatures.

The OLED tail-lights include 360 light segments capable of changing their image every 10 milliseconds, and can be used in conjunction with Car-to-X tech – which communicates with road infrastructure and traffic management centres – to warn drivers behind of crashes or other hazards the car detects ahead.

Inside, there is an all-new interior not seen in any previous Audi model – dubbed the ‘Digital Stage’ – with an 11.9-inch instrument display and 14.5-inch touchscreen integrated into one curved panel, surrounded by ambient lighting claimed to make it appear to float at night.

There is another 10.9-inch touchscreen for the passenger – with an Active Privacy Mode that prevents it from being seen by the driver on the move – and an augmented-reality head-up display said to make its contents appear like a sign 200 metres up the road.

The central touchscreen runs a new infotainment system based on Android Automotive – not to be confused with Android Auto, which is an app on an existing infotainment system – with over-the-air updates.

It includes third-party apps such as YouTube built into the system, with an app store, new artificial intelligence-powered voice assistant, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A 20-speaker, 830-watt Bang and Olufsen premium sound system is optional, with speakers integrated into the front-seat headrests.

The photos show the Q6 E-Tron is fitted with touch-sensitive buttons for the mirrors, door locks and seat memory – a U-turn from other brands in the Volkswagen Group, which have committed to moving away from touch-sensitive controls in their models.

Upholstery options range from conventional nappa leather, to Dinamica microfibre, and other fabrics produced from recycled materials.

The SQ6 is distinguished inside with sports seats with S embossing, a red ring around the start-stop button, and unique infotainment system graphics.

Boot space is quoted at 526 litres (vs 854L claimed for a Tesla Model Y), which expands to 1529L with the rear seats folded – plus a further 64 litres under the front bonnet.

Under the skin, Audi highlights wider rear tyres than the fronts for improved traction, and a choice of passive coil-spring or adaptive air suspension, the latter capable of lowering the car by up to 30mm at speed, and the rear axle by up to 50mm for ease of loading the boot.

A full suite of advanced safety technology is available, including semi-autonomous driving tech which steers, accelerates and brakes the car in its lane on the highway.

The 2024 Audi Q6 E-Tron is due in European showrooms later this year.

It is said to use recycled materials throughout its construction, including 15 per cent concentration of recycled scrap steel, as well as recycled materials in plastic components, and interior fabrics.
