2024 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport facelift breaks cover ahead of imminent unveiling

A second, surprise facelift for the ageing Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 4WD is around the corner, with new styling – and a version of the new Triton’s engine.


A late-life facelift for the 2024 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has appeared in leaked images overseas ahead of a formal unveiling reportedly days away, and Australian showroom arrivals in the coming months.

The updates for the current Pajero Sport – which look to include a new engine with slightly more power – indicate an all-new model based on the underpinnings of the new 2024 Triton ute is some time away, and isn’t due until next year.

Mitsubishi dealers have reportedly been advised the updates – significant enough to earn a new model code, ‘QG’, with the last time this occurred the first facelift in 2019 – are due in Australian showrooms by the middle of this year.

The biggest change appears to be the fitment of the new Triton’s 2.4-litre ‘4N16’ diesel engine, according to images posted online, including by Kurdistan Automotive Blog and Thailand’s Car250.

The updated Pajero Sport (above and below) is shown to use the new Triton’s engine cover – with key mechanical components have moved to their positions on the ute – confirming the engine change.

However it appears to be the 135kW/430Nm single-turbo version of the new ‘4N16’ engine – rather than the twin-turbo 150kW/470Nm variant – judging by the size of the turbocharger assembly (side-by-side comparison in the gallery below).

It would still represent a mild improvement over the current Pajero Sport’s 133kW/430Nm 2.4-litre single-turbo ‘4N15’ diesel engine – which is unchanged in capacity but has a higher compression ratio to the new engine.

It remains to be seen if the Pajero Sport retains its eight-speed automatic transmission, or moves to the Triton’s six-speed gearbox.

The images posted online show the second facelift for the nine-year-old Pajero Sport will include a restyled front grille insert, a revised front skid plate, new-design 18-inch alloy wheels, and a subtle tweak to the rear bumper.

Models with blacked-out trim – the GSR in Australia, and Elite Edition in Thailand – now appear set for a black tailgate garnish, mirror caps and door handles, rather than chrome currently.

Inside, it gains the new Triton’s three-spoke steering wheel, as well as a red and black leather interior colour combination believed to be new.

The rest of the interior appears unchanged, including the infotainment touchscreen – which is not the new Triton’s tablet-style 9.0-inch display.

Given production appears to have started, the 2024 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is likely to be announced in the coming weeks – possibly at the Bangkok motor show in Thailand at the end of this month.

Australian showroom arrivals are expected to commence in the coming months, though Mitsubishi is yet to disclose timing.

An all-new replacement for the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is due sometime in 2025, according to a Mitsubishi product presentation shown to media and investors 12 months ago – though there is a possibility it may wear a different badge.
