  • The FTR Sport variant stands out with color-matched windscreen and special touches, while the R Carbon goes bold with red-black colorway.

Imagine you’re a bikemaker who has a solid motorcycle that’s been well-loved worldwide. What do you do with it? Either you make it better with upgrades or you let it remain the solid product it is. The latter is what Indian Motorcycles is doing with its FTR 1200 this year. For its fifth year in the lineup, the roadster has received a mild refresh to make it sexier than ever. None of the changes come at an extra cost.

The biggest change here is the set of new liveries across the variants. The range starts from the FTR, offered in an Indy Red colorway. It comprises a red fuel tank with contrast graphics, gloss black wheels, and a white monoshock. Then comes the FTR Sport. There are two new liveries on offer, namely Granite Gray Blue and Storm Gray Black.

The former has a dark gray base coat, accentuated by blue accents (graphics, shocks, wheels) and a titanium-like chassis finish. Whereas, the latter takes a sportier approach with its light gray bodywork, red accents (instead of blue ones), and a gloss red trellis chassis. Livery aside, the Sport differs from the base variant with special touches like:

  • Color-matched windscreen
  • Color-matched pillion seat cowl
  • Color-matched belly pan
  • 4-inch TFT (base model has a digi-analog cluster)

Finally, we have the FTR R Carbon. For 2024, it bids adieu to the simple livery from last year and goes bold with a red-black colorway. The tank, fenders, and seat cowl all have a raw carbon fiber finish, jazzed up by red stripes on the tank. This is topped by a glittery red finish on the trellis frame, wheels, and even the swingarm. An added contrast comes thanks to the yellow Ohlins suspension at both ends.

Interestingly, Indian hasn’t mentioned the FTR Rally variant this time. So it looks like we won’t be getting an off-road-spec FTR scrambler in 2024. To jog your memory, the Rally came with a 19-inch front wheel, knobby tires, a ribbed saddle, and a bespoke livery (with earthly finishes).

What’s Unchanged On The 2024 Indian FTR 1200

On the mechanical side, there are no changes for either FTR variant. All of them carry forward Indian’s 1,200cc, liquid-cooled V-twin engine that’s good for 120 horsepower and 87 pound-feet. Power reaches the wheel via a six-speed transmission. Also common between the trio is a trellis chassis and a cast subframe.

This is joined to a tubular subframe and 17-inch wheels, where the latter are slowed down by Brembo calipers and disc brakes. Suspension comprises fully adjustable ZF Sachs 43 mm USD forks and ZF Sachs monoshock on the base and Sport variants. The R Carbon has higher-spec Ohlins suspension.
