The first modern electric SUV was the Toyota RAV4 EV. Prescient in its design, with a battery pack in the floor, it was a well-loved model in the renaissance era of EVs that came thanks to a CARB zero emissions mandate for automakers. There are currently more than a few working examples of the original RAV4 EV on the road today. As great as that car was, it had an EPA range of 94 miles. Toyota claimed it could do 134 miles on a full charge, but either way, that’s not a tremendous amount of range.

Today, EVs can do up to four to five times that figure. Battery technology has come a long way since CheveronTexaco was able to strangle out the EV market in the early 2000s. Now the bigger EV manufacturers just make their own batteries, and they’ve gotten pretty good at it. Smaller manufacturers actually have access to high-quality battery technology now too.

All of this combined with a better charging network means that EVs are taking the green automotive movement by storm. It’s not just sedans that have the best electric SUV range. SUVs can go further now too. Following in the RAV4 EV’s footsteps, we’ve got a list of the 10 highest-range SUV EVs that will be available this year.

10 Kia EV6

The EV6 is among the best electric SUVs available when considering price, performance and quality. Kia has built a comfortable family car that has the range to both take you all over town without sweating charge level, or on a serious road trip. Most of the RWD models will do 310 miles on a single charge. However, if you’re willing to sacrifice some of that range, the EV6 GT is sneakily one of the most powerful and fun to drive electric vehicles on the road. This article is all about range though, so here are the specs for a base model Wind RWD.

The base EV6 Wind RWD gives you all you need in an EV SUV. You can take the kids to school with the dog in the back, drive to the beach without worrying about running out of juice, and hit the farmer’s market on the weekend. 310 miles for an SUV is a very good start, but we’ve got more to give here on our list.

9 GMC Hummer EV SUV

The Hummer EV is a bit of a meme thanks to its commercials starring LeBron James. However, GM is not joking around when it comes to making a high-performing SUV. The Edition 1 and the EV3 trims of the SUV can get 314 miles on a single charge, making it perfect for taking into the back-country, camping, and other rugged activities. No worries about getting stranded with that kind of range. The three motors mean great torque, towing, and power for the tricky stuff too. Here’s how the Hummer EV SUV’s performance shakes out.

The performance stats here are absurd. The 11,500 pound-feet of torque is a bit suspect. Considering the Rimac Nevera, the fastest and second most powerful EV in the world, gets about 1/8th of that, we’re not so sure. However, it’s right on the Hummer website in big font, so who are we to question it? Even if they added an extra zero, the Hummer EV SUV brings more than enough juice to get you through the toughest of off-road conditions, or have a really fun day at the track. All that with over 300 miles of range for doing normal stuff too.

8 Cadillac LYRIQ

Considering they both use the Ultium platform, it’s not that surprising that the Cadillac LYRIQ has the same range as the Hummer EV. This is a classier and more comfortable option for those looking at American electric SUVs. Where the Hummer is a lot of flash and arguably unnecessary power, the LYRIQ is a bit more suited for that road trip or night on the town. Here are its slightly more subdued performance figures.

While obviously less than the Hummer, the performance on the Cadillac won’t leave you feeling the need to mash the pedal to get places. 340 horses is nothing to turn your nose up at. The LYRIQ is a more elegant solution than its big cousin, with the same range of 314 miles and a bit more style.

7 BMW iX

EPA-estimated Range: 324 Miles

BMW has hit the electric scene hard in the past decade, with a variety of models from eco-wagons to their typical luxury sedans to this mid-sized SUV. A true luxury snob-mobile, the xDrive50 lets you both feel superior due to your badge, and double-so due to your zero-emissions status. However, the price may cause some sticker shock. At around $88,000, it’s about one and a half times as expensive as the previously mentioned LYRIQ. It does have a bit more to give in the performance department, but the range of 324 miles on a full charge in the xDrive50 trim is just a slight increase over the former.

While the performance is fairly impressive, what BMW SUV owner is ever going to use 516 horses? The worst case scenario is some rich geezer accidentally accelerating into the back of your car off a stoplight. BMW may have gotten a little overzealous here with the power numbers, but overall, the iX is a luxurious SUV with range and thrills that were an absolute pipe dream just a few short years ago. If a soccer mom wants to drag race a Porsche 911 between school runs, she has a real shot at winning.

6 Tesla Model Y

While the 2024 Tesla Model Y has been downgraded to a 310-mile range, the 2023 Tesla Model Y is still rated at 330 miles by the EPA. So buyers looking for a longer-range Tesla may find some savings by searching for the old version. Although the ranges are probably the same in the real world, the EPA has just tweaked its testing standards. Not much has really changed in terms of performance either. The old model has the same power and speed as the new one, as we’ll display below.

The Model Y has been the stalwart small luxury EV SUV option for years, since Tesla is able to keep their prices around those of Kia and Hyundai, with a bit more panache in their brand. While the build quality may not be on the same level as the Korean makes, saying you drive a Tesla carries a bit more weight around the office and pub. Access to the Tesla charging network doesn’t hurt either. With its long range and great branding, the Model Y isn’t going anywhere.

5 Tesla Model X

Like its little brother, the Model X took a hit in the EPA range (335 miles for the 2024 model year versus 348 miles for the 2023 model year) this new year as well. However, regardless of which number we’re looking at, it still comes in at four on our list. The Model X is probably the most famous electric SUV, with its wild gull-wing doors, and the insane speeds achieved in the Plaid Model. Don’t let those things fool you, though, there is sense in buying one.

It has a spacious interior, room for kids, dogs, and sporting equipment, as well as the previously mentioned great range. The Model X is a popular electric option for a reason. Even without the Plaid Model, the Model X still packs an absolute wallop in terms of power. As for the range, you get 348 miles on a full charge at your disposal. What you might do with this power beyond speed down the highway is really the question. Despite being a big, heavy, AWD SUV, there’s very little off-road application for the Tesla. However, that’s not really a concern for the Tesla owner, being able to bring the dogs to the park in a stylish big, green SUV, that they know can outrace a Dodge Viper is probably enough.

4 Fisker Ocean

Fisker burst onto the EV scene with its Karma, a beautiful and ingenious EV that combined the power of batteries and a petroleum-powered generator to take you where you need to go. While not a zero-emissions vehicle, it did get Fisker’s foot in the door as a name-brand. Now the company is back at it with the Ocean, a small electric SUV, this time fully powered by batteries. Here’s how the Extreme Model, a slightly more rugged version with a longer range, performs.

The Extreme has the best of both worlds, with big power and the ability to haul and tow some decent weight. Fisker even thinks you’ll like what it can do off-road. For a small, crossover-style SUV these are pretty good figures. The range is quite impressive, too, with the EPA rating it at 360 miles on a full charge in the Extreme trim. Despite the impressive range, it is not as efficient as you might think it is.

3 Jeep Wagoneer S

The Wagoneer S should be available in the fall of 2024. Jeep fans will be excited about the first fully electric offering from the classic brand in the U.S. Like the Grand Wagoneer, this is a luxury SUV. While no price has been announced, it’s probably going to be in the Model X and BMW iX range, of $80,000+. Here’s what we know about its performance so far.

This will be the first car in the U.S. on Stellantis’ new STLA Large Platform, something they believe will power the future of their electric brands. Stellantis is committed to an electric future in its Dare Forward initiative. The platform will also power the new electric Dodge Charger, as well as Alfa Romeo’s electric vehicles and more from the massive auto-conglomerate. The Wagoneer S will also feature some new technology, like a dedicated touch screen for the passenger, because, why not? If Stellantis isn’t bluffing about the Large Platform’s range, they’ll have laid down a big marker in the electric game.

Rivian is a great newcomer to the EV game with its sleek styling and formidable range and power. They make EV SUVs and trucks that actually work as SUVs and trucks, in all kinds of conditions. The R1S is their flagship SUV EV, and its party piece is a massive 400-mile range with the Max Pack battery, making it arguably the best electric SUV in terms of both quality and usability. The R1S has the typical EV speed, but it can also actually tow some horses or a big trailer. Rivian boasts the quad motor models can climb 100-percent grades as well (though they don’t have the 400-mile range of the dual motor options). All models can ford water up to 43 inches or nearly four feet, which is wild for an electric vehicle. So if you’re looking for rugged, powerful, and long-range SUV, call Rivian. Just don’t get too mad when they want about six figures for the trouble.

1 Cadillac Escalade IQ

The Escalade has always done it big. Since its release, it’s been the king of bling, featured in countless music videos and episodes of MTV Cribs. Now the granddaddy of all luxury SUVs comes to take its crown as the top-range EV SUV. The Escalade IQ should be available sometime this summer, per Cadillac. Here’s what we know so far about its performance abilities.

With these huge numbers, Cadillac is looking to reset the market for big EV SUVs not just with the power figures, but also with a range of up to 450 miles. At this point, only Rivian can really compete at all in terms of size and power, and they are still 50 miles off in range.

Now, without the EPA verifying the mileage, we’ll have to take the ambitious 450 miles with a grain of salt, but if Caddy can get even 80-percent of the way there, the Escalade IQ will be a big winner.
