2025 Audi A3 facelift unveiled


Meet what is likely to be the last Audi A3 with petrol power, now available in a higher-riding Allstreet trim. It’s due in Australian showrooms later this year.


The facelifted 2025 Audi A3 small car has been unveiled with a new look and features – plus the option of an off-road-styled Allstreet variant in Europe – ahead of showroom arrivals in Australia due towards the end of 2024.

It is the mid-life update for what is expected to be the final petrol and diesel-powered A3 as – unless the company winds back its plans – all new-generation Audis launched from 2026 will be electric.

The A3 has enjoyed a sales resurgence in Australia – up 57 per cent last year – after the new model arrived in 2022, which was 18 months behind schedule, and two years after its European unveiling.

For every 10 A3s sold, Mercedes-Benz delivered seven A-Class hatchbacks or sedans – and BMW five 1 Series hatchbacks, though it sells its small sedan under the 2 Series Gran Coupe badge, of which it sold three for every 10 A3s delivered.

Prices for the updated model are yet to be announced. The current A3 starts from $50,600 plus on-road costs – $4000 less than the cheapest 1 Series, and more than $11,000 less than the most affordable A-Class.

The updated A3 is the first non-electric Audi with the company’s new design language, set to feature on models from the new A5 Sportback and Avant wagon – which replace the current A5 Sportback, A4 sedan and A4 Avant – to the next Q3 and Q5 SUVs.

It includes a smaller, now-frameless front grille than the current A3, with the Audi badge placed on its top edge – plus more subtle front bumper air intakes, and increased use of body colouring, on regular and S Line models.

There’s a new rear bumper on all models, as well as matrix LED headlights now with four customisable daytime-running light signatures, and new District Green, Progressive Red and matte Daytona Grey paint options.

Available for the first time is the A3 Allstreet, a higher-riding, front-wheel-drive-only version with off-road-inspired styling elements and larger wheels.

The Allstreet – a nod to the all-wheel-drive Allroad versions of Audi wagons – was first caught testing in Europe three and a half years ago, based on the pre-facelift A3, but it appears Audi may have delayed its release to coincide with the facelifted range.

The new variant has 30mm more ground clearance, thanks to 15mm-taller, retuned suspension and larger-diameter tyres available with 17-, 18- or 19-inch wheels.

It is differentiated by a unique front bumper housing a taller grille, metallic highlights on the air vents, front spoiler and rear bumper, new side skirts, and black wheel-arch flares.

Inside, changes are minimal, limited to new air-vent inserts, a subtly-revised centre console, and a flatter design for the compact automatic gear shifter.

The 30-colour ambient lighting now runs around the centre console and cupholders, the fabric on the front door panels is now laser-cut with small holes so it is backlit, and there’s a new Sonos premium sound system.

There’s a “technical textured fabric” trim inlay made from recycled polyester and Dinamica microfibre, with Dinamica also available as seat upholstery.

Standard in Europe is a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.1-inch touchscreen, plus a wireless smartphone charger, four USB-C ports and DAB+ digital radio.

The screen includes an app store for downloading third-party software, as well as support for the Amazon Alexa voice assistant.

The Audi A3 is offered in Europe with ‘functions on demand’, where features from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to adaptive cruise control, satellite navigation, and dual zones for the climate control, can be purchased after the vehicle is delivered, either outright or rented for a limited time.

It means the hardware to support these features is standard in all vehicles sold in Europe but it is not unlocked unless buyers pay extra when ordering the car from the factory – or purchase it through the in-car touchscreen.

The advanced safety feature suite has been expanded with assisted lane changes at up to 90km/h for the lane-centring and adaptive cruise control systems.

Initially the updated A3 will be available in Europe with a 110kW/250Nm ’35 TFSI’ 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with mild-hybrid assistance, or 110kW/360Nm ’35 TDI’ 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder.

Both engines are matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. A six-speed manual is due to become available with the 35 TFSI at a later date in Europe.

Audi says “additional [petrol] and diesel versions of the A3 Sportback and A3 Sedan will follow [between April and June 2024],” and that “a plug-in hybrid model will be added to the range at the end of the year.”

In Australia the A3 is currently powered by the 35 TFSI 1.5-litre petrol engine, or a 40 TFSI 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with 140kW/320Nm, a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, and all-wheel drive.

Details of the updated S3 four-cylinder hot hatch and sedan are expected to be announced in the coming months, while a similar update has been photographed for the five-cylinder RS3 performance variant.

Orders for the 2025 Audi A3 are due to open in Europe this month. Australian showroom arrivals are due to commence in late 2024.
