Of the 401 drivers caught, 281 motorists were caught excessively speeding by 10-19km/h, 26 were clocked speeding by 20-29km/h and two were detected speeding 30-39km/h – above the legal 40km/h limit.
A Western Australia Police road operation booked 401 drivers excessively speeding above the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone – in just one afternoon.
Police said approximately 1400 vehicles passed through road cameras managed by two traffic officers – located on Stirling Highway along Peppermint Grove, a suburb west of Perth – in late February 2024.
Of the 401 motorists detected speeding between 2:30pm and 4:00pm, police said 281 drivers were clocked excessively speeding by 10-19 km/h, 26 were identified speeding above 20-29km/h, and two were observed speeding by 30-39km/h – above the 40km/h school zone limit.
Road Policing Commander Mike Bell said the speed limit was put in place for safety.
“Children are vulnerable pedestrians and 40km/h school zones are specifically designed to maximise the safety of … the children,” he said in a media statement.
WA Acting Traffic Commander, Michael Peters urged motorists to be patient when passing through school zones.
“We’re only asking for a fairly small sacrifice for road users to be patient in those zones because it’s a small period of time [when] we have the most vulnerable members of the community trying to cross roads,” he said to 6PR Perth Gary Adshead.
