2024 Chevrolet Malibu: A Comprehensive Guide On Features, Specs, And Pricing

Yes, the Chevrolet Malibu is still here. The ninth generation of the classic nameplate remains in Chevy’s lineup for the 2024 model year. It was slated for discontinuation in 2023, but Chevy has quietly continued producing them, for now. The mid-size sedan segment once boomed, much like the SUV segments do today, yet, at least from a domestic production standpoint, the 2024 Malibu remains America’s last mid-size (non-luxury) sedan.

The Chevrolet Malibu is good at being average. There’s only one powertrain option, a small turbo engine. It offers the most modern tech and creature comforts across all trim levels, but some things are limited to upper trims and, from a design standpoint, are starting to age. Regardless, the Malibu is safe, reliable, and affordable.

Expert Opinion: The Malibu remains in Chevy’s lineup for another year after it was slated to be discontinued. As GM’s last mid-size sedan, it maintains its status quo as a functional American sedan with bland styling but some modern amenities. It gets one powertrain option that gets decent fuel economy. Safety and driver assistance features are standard on all models, as is rear parking assist and HD rear vision camera.

Chevy dropped the Malibu’s larger 2.0-liter turbo engine option after the 2022 model year. For 2024, the only engine available is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that has been the base option in this generation of Malibu since it was introduced. It was previously paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, but now uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The output on the 1.5-liter turbo is a mild 163 horsepower. Under full throttle, the Malibu pulls from zero to 60 mph in under 7.8 seconds.

2024 Chevrolet Malibu Versus Its Competitors

The 2024 Chevy Malibu is America’s last mid-size (non-luxury) sedan. It faces tough competition against industry-dominants like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. All three nameplates have been around for a long time, but both the Camry and Accord have managed to maintain pace in a shrinking sedan market where the Malibu has fallen short.

Here’s how the 2024 Honda Accord stacks up against the 2024 Malibu. For starters, the Accord offers a hybrid model, which Chevy discontinued on the Malibu several years ago. Both of Accord’s powertrains are more powerful and more fuel efficient than the Malibu’s single 1.5-liter turbo engine.

The Honda Accord has more options, and more modern features, and is more stylish than the current Malibu. Prices for the Accord start higher than the Malibu, but the Accord offers a far more comprehensive package than the Malibu does.

Here’s how the 2024 Malibu compares to the 2024 Camry. First, the Camry’s reliability record. Second, it also offers a hybrid, like the Accord, but unlike the Accord, the Camry still offers a V-6 and offers all-wheel drive; unheard of today. Unfortunately, the Camry’s V-6 will cease to exist for the 2025 model year. In any case, all of Camry’s powertrains are more powerful than the Malibu’s 1.5-liter turbo. The Camry’s standard four-cylinder powertrain and hybrid powertrain both get better fuel economy than the Malibu. Of course, the Camry’s V-6 gets worse MPGs than the Malibu.

Pricing for the Camry starts higher than the Malibu, but ultimately, the Camry offers more for that money than the Malibu. Considering the Camry’s three powertrain options, standard active safety equipment, fuel economy, available all-wheel drive, and Toyota’s bullet-proof reliability, the Camry simply offers a lot for the money.

Is It Worth Buying The 2024 Chevrolet Malibu?

Silver 2024 Chevrolet Malibu
Chevrolet

If buying American is important, the Chevy Malibu is the only mid-size (non-luxury) option available. If cost weighs in heavy on a car purchase decision, the Chevy Malibu is affordable. In either case, there are cars that are cheaper and that offer more and better in terms of features and technology.

The Malibu gets plenty of standard tech and safety features, including safety and driver assistance on all models, but so do other mid-size car competitors. Most of the other mid-size options are more powerful and more fuel-efficient than Malibu too. While the Malibu is a fine buy, there are several other buys out there to consider in the mid-size sedan segment.
