Summary

  • The 800X features a 799cc twin-cylinder engine, high-quality suspension, 21/18-inch spoke wheels, and various rider aids.
  • For off-road enthusiasts, the Rally version of the 800X offers enhanced features like increased suspension travel and ground clearance.

In the last couple of years, Kove Moto has made all the right kinds of noise in the two-wheeler world. Much of the credit goes to the super-impressive 450 Rally–the most affordable rally-spec adventure bike in America. Now, the Chinese bikemaker has taken another big step. It’s announced its newest middleweight ADV–the 800X–in America. To jog your memory, the new motorcycle debuted a few months ago, followed by its launch in Europe.

Diving right in, the 800X employs a 799cc, twin-cylinder engine. It’s armed with liquid cooling and a DOHC setup to produce 95 horsepower and 59 pound-feet. This is a pretty respectable output, which is higher than Japanese bikes like the Honda Transalp 750 and the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE and not too short of popular European middleweight ADVs. You also have a suite of rider aids to keep you right side up. The list includes:

  • Bi-directional quickshifter
  • Traction control
  • ABS
  • Cruise control
  • Two ride modes (Eco and Sport)

All these are accessed by a TFT instrument cluster.

The 800X is built around a double-cradle chassis. It joins hands with 49 mm USD forks and a monoshock, both fully adjustable with 8.2 and 9.4 inches of travel, respectively. This is topped by 21/18-inch spoke wheels, shod in dual-purpose tube tires. You also get double disc brakes up top and a single rear disc. All of it helps the motorcycle weigh in at 418 pounds fully fueled.

Rally Version Takes Things Up A Notch

Want something more hardcore? Then, Kove has the 800X Rally for you, focusing on strictly off-road use. This version comes with spruced-up suspension travel (10.6 and 9.8 inches fore and aft), along with a single front disc and knobby tires. There’s also 11.5 inches of ground clearance–0.7 up from the non-Rally version. A couple of other notable changes include the removal of the above-mentioned rider aids, a flatter seat, a different ECU, the absence of a luggage rack, and a low-set front fender.

Kove Moto has priced the 800X from $9,999. This is the price of the Adventure Pro version, while the Rally comes at $13,999. You should know the latter is not a road-legal model as of now (just like the 450 Rally Pro version). At this base MSRP, the 800 costs $800 less than its arch-rival, the Yamaha Tenere 700. It also undercuts the Aprilia Tuareg 660 and the KTM 890 Adventure R.
