Japanese car fans now have access to number plates in the ‘JDM’ style in South Australia, following their availability in other states.
South Australians can now get a number plate to match their Japanese car.
The State Government has announced the new Japanese-style number plates can be ordered in a custom combination of up to six characters, printed with either black, blue, green, or maroon writing on a white background.
Those wanting their own custom number plate will have to pay an annual fee of $235 for the rights to display them on their car.
For those looking to buy a set of plates, a series of green-on-white plates in the Japanese style will be issued from ’00AAA’, priced from $259 outright.
The SA Government is also auctioning off a series of special-edition Japanese-style number plates, running from ’00JDM’ to ’99JDM’ – with JDM short for Japanese domestic market.
The new plate style is sized at 330mm by 165mm – the same as real number plates in Japan – meaning some personally-imported cars aren’t designed to accommodate larger Australian number plates.
Depending on the combination chosen, the design also includes Japanese writing on the top which translates to ‘South Australia’, while a symbol at the bottom translates as ‘car’.
South Australia is one of the last states to introduce Japanese number plates, with the style already available in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, ACT, and Tasmania.
