Now, in the new Macan EV, Porsche has taken advantage of that, along with developing precise steering and electric motors that react to your intents and driving situations.

Both the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo have a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) layout, and the electric motors are controlled through the electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM). Porsche says this operates around five times faster than a conventional AWD system and can respond to slip within 10 milliseconds.


Apart from reacting to the situation, the AWD system’s behavior is also dependent on what drive mode you’re in. This also influences the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) that’s fitted as standard to the Macan Turbo. PTV Plus is an electronically controlled

All of that performance is going to be useless if the Macan EV isn’t able to provide the range and charging needs of EV customers, right? Fortunately, Porsche has also tried to push the boundaries of EV technology with the new Macan. Starting with its Premium Performance Electric (PPE) platform that the upcoming Audi Q6 will also inherit, the Macan EV is using a platform that is designed from the ground up for EV applications.


Understandably, the Macan EV will have a strong focus on speed. The base Macan 4’s dual-motor AWD system already produces 402 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, which is already good enough to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.

Splurge for the range-topping Macan Turbo, and you now get 630 horses and 833 pound-feet of torque, which enables a 0-60 mph acceleration time of just 3.1 seconds and a 160 mph top speed. With these numbers, you would think that the Macan EV would be inefficient, right? Well, not exactly.

The new Macan EV may look like your typical Porsche crossover SUV, but lurking underneath that simple sheet metal is a plethora of clever active and passive aerodynamic systems. For the active ones, the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) includes an adaptive rear spoiler, active cooling flaps at the front air intakes, as well as flexible covers at the Macan EV’s fully-sealed underbody. Therefore, the energy density relative to its size is much greater, and it enables one clever trick with its 800-volt system. The 800-volt system enables DC charging of up to 270 kW, which is impressively quick. That’s good enough for a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 21 minutes. The problem is, only a few chargers with that output exist in the United States.


This is where Porsche’s ingenuity comes in. The charging system of the Macan EV can enable the 100 kWh, 800-volt battery to be treated as if it were a pair of 400-volt batteries. This speeds up its charging times at 400-volt charging stations–the type of charger that’s far more common than high-output chargers. Finally, with a WLTP range of up to 367 miles for the Macan Turbo and up to 380 miles for the Macan 4, those charging stops–as fast as they could be, wouldn’t be as frequent as you’d probably do in other EVs in its segment.
