The new Suzuki Swift city hatch – due mid-year – will be down on power compared to its predecessor. Prices are yet to be announced.

The new 2024 Suzuki Swift has been approved for sale in Australia – with a step back in power compared to the previous model – ahead of showroom arrivals due in June.

Government documentation seen by Drive confirms the new 1.2-litre three-cylinder ‘Z12E’ petrol engine in the 2024 Swift will produce 61kW – down 5kW from the 66kW/120Nm of the previous model’s 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine.

Overseas the engine produces 108Nm, though a torque output for Australia are yet to be confirmed. If this figure carries over locally, the new car would be 12kW down on its predecessor.

Prices are yet to be confirmed, however an increase is likely to account for new technology and safety features. The current model is priced from $22,490 before on-road costs in most Australian states.

Suzuki has kept weight down, showing a scant 890kg tare mass – without fuel, engine fluids or occupants – for the base model with a five-speed manual transmission.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) will also be available, adding 39kg to the vehicle’s weight.

As revealed at the Tokyo motor show last year, the 2024 Swift is an evolution of the previous model, but is slightly longer and lower, measuring 3860mm long (up 20mm), 1735mm wide and 1485mm tall (down 10mm), with a 2450mm wheelbase.

Standard equipment – according to the government documents – may include 15-inch wheels wrapped in 175/65 tyres, with 16-inch options (185/55 tyres) available on more expensive grades.

What is not shown in the documents is whether the mild-hybrid version sold overseas arrive Down Under, which uses an integrated starter-generator motor to provide a minor boost to performance, and trim fuel efficiency.

Pricing will also be revealed closer to the new Swift’s Australian introduction.
