Chinese car maker Chery is joining the electric-car race in Australia with a BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV rival.

The 2024 Chery Omoda E5 – the electric version of the Omoda 5 petrol small SUV – is due in Australian showrooms by the middle of this year.

Prices will be announced closer to launch. Using overseas markets as a guide, the Omoda E5 may be priced from less than $50,000 plus on-road costs – in line with Chinese and South Korean rivals.

The petrol Omoda 5 is priced from $32,990 drive-away.

The new Omoda E5 is powered by a 150kW/340Nm electric motor on the front axle and a 61kWh battery pack, claimed to enable up to 430km of WLTP lab-tested driving range, energy use of 15.5kWh/100km, and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.6 seconds.

More details on the 2024 Chery Omoda E5 are due closer to launch “by mid-year 2024”.
