Vintage game consoles turned into speedometers for cars is the latest online trend.
The latest technology modification trend is turning Nintendo Game Boy Colour handheld game consoles into functioning vehicle speedometers.
An example of the new wave of repurposed gaming consoles was spotted by website The Drive on Facebook group Retro Future Community.
“It’s a GPS module housed inside the Game Boy, so it’s completely wireless and can be used with any car, bike, etc,” James McNichol, one of the Facebook group members who has created a Nintendo-style speedometer, told The Drive.
Mr McNichol’s Game Boy Colour speedometer reportedly indicates the car’s GPS speed, rather than the speed listed in the vehicle’s instrument cluster, which is calculated via wheel or gearbox rotation.
Mr McNichol – known as ‘INKDRETRO’ on the social media platform Instagram – is just one example of a person turning a Game Boy Colour into a functioning speedometer.
Similarly, another Instagram user who goes by the username @zaku_mods has turned the Game Boy speedometer into an online business, accepting orders online for customers wanting a piece of gaming history in their vehicles.
