The door was part of a 2013 art installation and has an estimated value worth more than the original retail price of the vehicle.
A Mazda 323 Protégé door which was previously part of an art installation – created by anonymous UK artist Banksy – is up for auction with an estimated value of anywhere from $US100,000 to $US200,000 ($AU154,000-308,000).
First reported by UK publication Motor1 , the Mazda door is set to go under the hammer at Julien’s Auction, with the car part transformed into an art piece titled ‘Crazy Horse’ which debuted on 9 October 2013 and was located at a street corner in New York City’s Lower East Side.
The piece is part of an overall street art auction set to start on 22 February 2024.
With a starting bid of $US25,000 – or $AU38,500 – this Banksy modified Mazda door exceeds the original retail price of this mid-to-late 1990s Mazda 323 Protégé, which was sold in Australia from $AU30,850 with the optional automatic transmission. However, adjusted for inflation, the Mazda today would be priced at more than $AU62,100.
The image on the Mazda door portrays a male looking above, and when combined with the other art pieces in the installation – depicts a group of stampeding horses trampling a group of seemingly petrified people.
