The Most Bang For The Buck Trim In The 2024 Tacoma Lineup

  • The new 4th generation Tacoma offers significant updates and improvements, including a more powerful and efficient powertrain and upgraded suspension for better off-road performance.
  • The TRD Off-Road trim level of the Tacoma is the best value for money, offering improved features, abilities, and comfort. It comes with additional off-road enhancements like crawl-control, locking rear differential, and front recovery hooks.
  • The interior of the new Tacoma has been redesigned and modernized, addressing previous complaints about seating position and outdated features. The TRD Off-Road trim offers optional extras like heated front seats and a moon roof. It also comes with Toyota’s best safety system, including features like pre-collision detection and adaptive cruise control.

One of the largest contributors to Toyota’s success in America is the Toyota pickup, and now, the Tacoma. The Tacoma is the company’s best-seller mid-size pickup truck offering, and unlike other trucks in the segment, it focuses on the lifestyle niche. Its cool and outdoorsy design, paired with its available off-road trim levels, make up for a truck that was one of the pioneers of the factory-ready adventure pickup.

Now, it is no mystery that the old variant of the Tacoma was getting a bit old. It was in production for seven years, and its age was starting to show. Its six-speed automatic transmission utilized a torque converter design that was reliable but unrefined compared to the market. Furthermore, its 3.5 liter V-6 was often characterized as underpowered and rather thirsty. The Taco was also falling back in terms of off-road features, as other models in the market offered bigger wheels, dual lockers, sway bar disconnects, and more.

Of course, Toyota being one of the largest and most successful manufacturers in the world, wouldn’t leave the best-selling mid-sized truck in the United States, to lose its first spot. Therefore, recently, a new model was introduced. The 4th generation Tacoma offers huge updates and many trim levels, and in this article, we will be covering the one we believe is the best bang for your buck.

What The New Tacoma Has To Offer

If you take a look at the truck and large SUV models of Toyota’s lineup, you will realize that they rarely get updated, and when they do, the updates aren’t all that extensive—more like modernizations. With the all-new Tacoma, however, this isn’t the case. The vehicle’s base, the actual chassis, might be similar. However, the parts bolted to it offer a huge leap forward than those of the old.

First and foremost, the new Taco offers an all-new and far more up-to-date powertrain. The old V-6 and six-speed transmission have now been replaced with a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine paired with an eight-speed automatic. Some trim levels, even offer the addition of a hybrid system, which increases efficiency and power.

Now, you might think that this is, another downsize exercise for the sake of emissions, which it is. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The old Taco managed to produce 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, while the new 2.4-liter produces a similar but more efficient 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid model further increases these numbers to 326 horsepower and 426 pound-feet of torque. You must also keep in mind that both these powertrains aren’t just as powerful; they are also paired with a much more refined transmission, meaning that the engine will be able to put the power to the wheels far more efficiently.

But wait, the updates do not stop there. Huge revisions have also been made to the Tacoma’s suspension. While the base model work-oriented trim still gets a leaf-sprung rear end, more expensive trims now come with a coil-sprung unit. Coil springs provide an advantage when it comes to ride quality but also off-road articulation. Coil-sprung suspension systems are more compliant; therefore, they absorb impacts and articulate better. When off-roading, improved articulation helps keep wheels in contact with the ground for longer. This, in turn, leads to a more stable off-road experience, but also more grip. Lifting wheels in off-road situations isn’t desirable, as a wheel in the air can’t put any power to the ground.

Of course, like all things, there is a trade-off. Coil-sprung suspension isn’t as good at hauling weight as leaf springs are. However, as mentioned in the beginning, the Tacoma is more of a lifestyle truck than a through-and-through work truck. Therefore, all-out towing and hauling numbers aren’t necessarily the priority.

Why The TRD Off-Road Is The Tacoma To Get

An Orange 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road

As mentioned above, the Tacoma is more of a lifestyle truck than a full-on work truck. Therefore, when buying one, it might be best to go for the trim model that offers the best blend of abilities and price. Of course, one could go for the cheaper SR or SR5 trim levels, but those can feel a bit lacking in features. Because of this, we believe the best bang for your buck in Tacoma out there is the TRD Off-Road.

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road adds improved looks, abilities, and even comfort. Firstly, the exterior gets blacked-out over-fenders and door handles, all-terrain tires, crawl-control, multi-terrain select, a locking rear differential, and front recovery hooks. These additions should drastically increase the Tacoma’s off-road abilities.

But wait, the upgrades don’t stop here. The TRD Off-Road also gets remote-reservoir Bilstein shocks and a ground clearance rating of 11.5 inches. The off-road-oriented trim level also unlocks optional extras like stronger skid plates, rear recovery points, and even a sway-bar disconnect. The sway bar disconnect can be rather beneficial. The role of a sway bar in a vehicle is to decrease body roll. However, by decreasing body roll, it also decreases wheel articulation, which isn’t desired off-road. By having the ability to disconnect the sway bar, you get the best of both worlds: good on-road handling and good off-road performance.

The TRD Off-Road trim level utilizes the all-new 2.4-liter engine, but sadly, it isn’t offered with the hybrid option. You will need to step up to the more expensive TRD Pro or Trailhunter trim levels for that. That being said, the TRD Off-Road will still be no slouch with 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Perhaps most exciting is the fact that the TRD Off-Road can be had with a manual transmission, which is getting incredibly rare these days. Keep in mind, though, that power figures with the manual fall to 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

The TRD Off-Road Offers A Great Interior

2024 Toyota Tacoma Interior

The old Tacoma was a great vehicle; however, it was also compromised in some ways. Aside from its outdated drivetrain, its interior was also in need of an update, but also of a redesign. The Tacoma was often criticized for having an unfriendly seating position for taller drivers. Thankfully, Toyota has addressed all issues with the new model.

As soon as you step inside, you are greeted with a far more modern but also pretty interior. The design inside the cabin suits the rugged and outdoorsy nature of the Tacoma incredibly well. The dashboard is upright and squared, but at the same time, it incorporates modern features like the 14-inch infotainment system. The seating position is also far better and will now easily accommodate tall adults.

Of course, there are more optional extras for the TRD Off-Road’s interior, which include heated front seats, a moon roof, audio and multimedia upgrades, and more. Worth noting is that the TRD Off-Road can be had either with a five-foot or six-foot bed depending on your needs.

One thing Toyota is adamant about is safety. All vehicles, regardless of their price or type, get the best safety features the company can offer. The new Tacoma comes with Safety Sense 3.0 and because of that, it is one of the safest trucks one can buy. Safety Sense 3.0 includes the following:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Proactive Driving Assist
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Road Sign Assist, and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Also worth mentioning is that there are plenty of convenience and towing options available, like a 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor with selectable front, side, and rear views, an integrated brake controller, a class IV tow hitch, and even an integrated high-output air compressor.

However, we must keep in mind that trucks these days are much more than just utility vehicles. The new Tacoma TRD Off-Road is as powerful and refined as any other normal vehicle out there while also packing some incredible abilities that will enable you to see places inaccessible with a normal car. So, in our opinion, and based on the times we live in, and all the TRD Off-Road trim has to offer, the pricing of the new Tacoma is justified.
