Buying an electric car for the first time can raise all kinds of questions. How do you charge it? How much range does it have? What is ‘regenerative braking’? What does this button do?

However, one of the less obvious queries prospective EV buyers might have is: How much does it cost to service an electric car?

While the purchase price of electric cars is still inflated compared to their internal combustion engine (ICE) cousins, EV servicing and maintenance costs are often lower than for other vehicles.

To find out the price range of electric vehicle maintenance costs in Australia, Drive spoke to a range of car manufacturers to find out just how much it will cost to service and maintain your next EV.

Do electric vehicles require less maintenance?

Yes, generally speaking, electric vehicles require less maintenance than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This is based on several different factors, some of which are listed down below:

  • Unlike petrol and hybrid cars that require maintenance on components like exhausts, transmissions and oil filters, electric vehicles have fewer moving parts when compared to ICE cars, and as such require less upkeep and servicing.
  • Due to most EVs having the ability to use regenerative braking – a process where kinetic energy is turned into electrical energy when the vehicle is slowing down – there is a reduction in the wear and tear on the conventional brake system, which inevitably prolongs its lifespan.
  • With fewer parts in the engine, EVs don’t require any oil changes to lubricate the components that keep the car functioning.
  • Though most EVs require a cooling system to regulate the temperature in the car, it’s simplified in comparison to ICE vehicles.
  • Electric vehicles can utilise over-the-air software updates to substantially improve their core systems, requiring fewer visits to service centres.

Electric vehicle maintenance – what to expect

Many car manufacturers will require electric vehicles to be serviced at a similar regularity to ICE cars, either annually or after a specific kilometre interval (usually 15,000km) – whichever comes first.

However, some EV manufacturers space their scheduled servicing intervals further apart, so you only need to visit the service centre every two years or 30,000km.

While each car manufacturer has a process for servicing its electric vehicles, most servicing packages are inclusive of the general cost of parts and labour.

This includes, but is not limited to, changing the pollen and air filters, general safety and EV component inspection, replacing necessary fluids and oils, battery maintenance and charging.

However, some car makers’ service plans don’t include the cost of the labour to fix and replace broken parts in the vehicle, which is usually at the expense of the owner.

Electric vehicle maintenance costs – how do they compare?

To give prospective EV buyers an idea of their future maintenance expenditure, we’ve tallied servicing costs over the first five years of ownership for every electric model available in Australia.

Here they are, ranked from the cheapest to the most expensive:


Audi’s E-Tron electric vehicles come with free servicing for the first six years or 90,000km (whichever comes first) and require a service every two years or 30,000km.

This complimentary plan covers the general inspection of the condition of the electric vehicle’s parts like its computer systems, braking components and powertrain compartments.

All Genesis models available in Australia – electric or otherwise – come equipped with complimentary five-year/75,000km servicing, which is broken down into 12-month/15,000km intervals.

British luxury car manufacturer Jaguar offers free servicing for the first five years or 200,000km on the Jaguar I-Pace – the brand’s only electric model – with scheduled servicing required every 12 months/15,000km.

Polestar shoppers can rejoice as any purchase of the Polestar 2 comes with a free five-year/100,000km service package – with service intervals set every two years or 30,000km. Servicing costs for the upcoming Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 models are yet to be announced.

Volvo’s electric variants of the Volvo XC40 and C40 small SUVs come equipped with a complimentary five-year/150,000km service package, with scheduled intervals every two years/30,000km.

Tesla does not specify scheduled servicing intervals but rather “recommends” certain service items at certain times using data from the car’s onboard computer. If needed, service appointments can be made through the Tesla app.

As for cost, Tesla operates on a case-by-case basis and doesn’t share set prices for any of its maintenance practices except for replacing the cabin filter, which costs $26.

General Tesla maintenance suggestions include:

  • Replacing the air cabin filter every two to three years.
  • Tyre rotation every 10,000km or if the tread depth difference exceeds 1.5mm.
  • Replacing the air-conditioning desiccant bag every three to four years.
  • Brake fluid test every four years – replenish as needed.
  • Cleaning and lubricating brake calipers every 12 months/20,000km for vehicles residing in cold-weather areas.

GWM offers a five-year scheduled servicing package for the electric GWM Ora priced at $99 per year, with intervals set every 12 months or 15,000km.

In total, servicing the GWM Ora over five years will cost owners $495.

The 2023 LDV eDeliver 9 electric van costs $440 to service over four years, while the 2023 LDV Mifa 9 people mover costs $730 to service over four years.

Most LDV electric models have a scheduled service interval of two years/30,000km.

Prior to the launch of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the American auto giant previously had its Ford e-Transit van as the only EV in its lineup – with service costs capped at $195 per year for the first 10 years, totalling $975 over a five-year period, with service intervals set every 12 months or 30,000km.

However, Ford‘s first passenger electric vehicle, the Mustang Mach-E SUV, has annual servicing costs that range from $135 to $180 per visit – with the second scheduled interval having the highest cost due to the replacement of the pollen filter, according to a Ford Australia spokesperson.

The Ford Mustang electric SUV is said to have a servicing interval of 12 months/15,000km – totalling $785 over five years.

Ford owners wanting to know servicing costs on their vehicles can look to Ford Australia’s servicing calculator to get a specific price.

Mini offers either a four-year ($1000) or six-year ($1500) basic service coverage on its Mini Electric. Each service interval is based on data gathered from BMW’s ‘Condition Based Service’ system used by Mini.

The basic service offer includes a standard vehicle check as well as replacing the air-conditioning filter and the brake fluid while charging the vehicle’s battery to 75–80 per cent.

Replacing the brake pads on both the front and rear of Mini EVs is extra and at the owner’s cost – the full terms and conditions can be found on Mini Australia’s website here.

A spokesperson for Hyundai Australia told Drive the brand’s electric cars require scheduled servicing every two years or 30,000km.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5‘s six-year scheduled servicing ranges in price from $570 to $1090 per visit – totalling $2355 over that period – while the Ioniq 6 has a fixed price of $560 per service over the same duration, totalling $1680.

Finally, Hyundai’s latest Kona Electric model has a fixed servicing price of $520 for every biennial service – totalling $1560 over six years.

Chinese manufacturer MG has a two-year/40,000km interval for both of its EV models – the MG ZS EV and the MG 4.

Those buying the MG ZS EV can expect a total of $1105 for scheduled servicing over the first five years of ownership.

Meanwhile, MG 4 owners should expect to pay $296 for their first service visit, and between $907 and $962 for their second visit, depending on the variant. This comes to a total of $1203–$1258 over five years.

The Fiat 500e has a scheduled servicing interval of 12 months/15,000km and capped-price servicing for the first eight years, with each visit priced at $250.

Over a five-year period, Fiat 500e buyers are looking at $1250 in total for servicing costs.

Kia offers a prepaid five-year service package on each of its electric models priced at $1351 for the Kia Niro EV and Kia EV9, $1382 for the Kia EV6 GT-Line and Air, and $1561 for the Kia EV6 GT model, with intervals set every 12 months/15,000km.

BYD’s servicing costs on the BYD Atto 3, BYD Dolphin and BYD Seal range from $189 to $447 per year depending on the year/kilometre interval.

In total, BYD customers can expect a maximum cost of $1384 over a five-year scheduled servicing plan.

According to the Chinese car maker, the average annual cost for a BYD owner driving approximately 20,000km per year is $299.

The Lexus RZ large SUV is the only electric model in the Lexus range to offer a full five years or 75,000km of capped-price servicing – priced at $395 a visit and totalling $1975 over five years.

Meanwhile, its smaller electric sibling, the Lexus UX300e, boasts capped-price servicing for five years or 75,000km priced at $295 per visit – totalling $1475 over three years.

Peugeot offers two versions of five-year servicing options on its electric models, the Peugeot E-2008 and Peugeot E-Partner.

Those thinking about wanting to pay upfront for five years’ worth of service on these models can opt for Peugeot’s ‘Pre-Paid Service Plan’ – priced at $1000 in total for the Peugeot E-2008 and $1200 for the Peugeot E-Partner.

However, customers wanting to pay as they go for the 12-month/25,000km servicing intervals can expect a starting price of $258 to a maximum cost of $374 for the E-2008 – totalling $1522 for five services – while E-Partner drivers are looking at $293 as the cheapest service price and up to $425 – costing a total $1730.

Cupra offers a five-year service pack on its Cupra Born electric car priced at $1590. Each servicing interval is set every 12 months or 15,000km (whichever happens first).

Nissan’s only electric model, the Nissan Leaf, has capped-price servicing for the first six years or 120,000km. Pricing starts from $291 for the first service and ranges up to $441 for the sixth service.

Over a five-year period, a Nissan Leaf will cost owners a total of $1734 to service.

The servicing intervals for the Nissan Leaf are set every 12 months/20,000km.

BMW’s electric vehicles have the option of a prepaid six-year/unlimited-kilometre ‘Service Inclusive Basic’ package. This maintenance coverage starts from $2200 for the BMW iX1 and iX2 and reaches up to $3075 for the BMW iX.

Those wanting to change their brake pads and discs on both the front and rear wheels of the car – as well as replacing the windscreen wiper blades – can opt for the ‘Service Inclusive Plus’ bundle which includes these additional extras.

BMW’s scheduled service intervals are dependent on the German car maker’s ‘Condition Based Service’ (CBS) system, which “permanently monitors oil levels and the degree of wear and tear on individual components of your BMW”.

According to the German luxury auto giant, this system – embedded into the infotainment screen – alerts drivers when a service is needed by analysing all the data gathered by the CBS.

German automaker Mercedes-Benz starts its EV five-year scheduled servicing at the EQV van variant – priced at $2650 – and reaches the other end of the cost spectrum for the Mercedes-AMG EQS sedan and SUV – costing $4280 for a five-year service plan.

Most electric Mercedes-Benz models have 12-month/25,000km servicing intervals – with the exception of the EQV which requires servicing every 40,000km or 12 months.

Luxury car maker Porsche offers a five-year/75,000km servicing and maintenance package priced at $5495 for its only EV model, the Taycan – with annual check-ups every 12 months/15,000km and a full inspection every two years/30,000km.

The inspection consists of replacing the brake fluid, wiper blade and particle filter on the vehicle and a general examination of the Taycan’s axle and rod joints, steering gear, drive shafts, brake system, as well as a wheel alignment.
