Nearly every new-generation 1.5-litre Toyota Yaris hatch could suffer front suspension failure if frequently subjected to “snow-melting chemicals”, according to the recall notice.
Toyota Australia has recalled 9070 examples of the 2020-2024 Toyota Yaris hatch, citing a potential fault with the front suspension.
The affected vehicles were produced by Toyota between 21 May 2020 and 19 January 2024.
About 11,000 Toyota Yaris hatchbacks were reported as sold since the latest model arrived in late 2020. Once sales of the GR Yaris hot hatch – which is not included in the recall – it appears nearly all regular petrol and petrol-hybrid versions of the current Yaris are affected.
“For involved vehicles, there is a possibility that, [sic] the ball joint attachment area of the front lower suspension arm may corrode and cause cracks if the vehicle is frequently exposed to snow-melting chemicals in snowy areas,” the recall notice says.
“If the vehicle continues to be driven, cracks may increase. In the worst case. [sic] the front lower suspension arm may break allowing the ball joint to dislodge resulting in reduced vehicle stability that may increasing [sic] the risk of a crash.”

Toyota Australia will contact owners of affected vehicles to provide details of this recall and arrange the affected components to be replaced by a local dealership, free of charge.
Owners of affected vehicles are encouraged to get in touch with their local dealership to verify if their vehicle is included in the recall.
The left and right lower suspension arm replacement process will reportedly take around three hours to complete.
