When KTM announced that the 790 Duke would be returning to the market, it seemed like one of the most bizarre decisions a modern motorcycle manufacturer could make.



A year on, and the brand has managed to answer a few important questions. For one, this is not going to cannibalize 890 sales as they dropped the base model 890 upon its return. It functions more or less as a stand-alone model, filling the void left by the old 690. It doesn’t really compete with the 890 in terms of specs, and now with the new 990 getting launched, it functions as the only real value-oriented alternative in their middleweight lineup.

So, there is some logic behind the decision. But, to make this resurrection viable, production has moved exclusively to China. KTM saddled up with CFMoto and this partnership has already borne fruit for both parties, and as is the case with most fruit from China, it is cheaper.

What’s New For 2024

In 2023, this was already one of the strangest bikes on the market, being a full on 2017 model that was relaunched. It will be carried over unchanged for the 2024 model year, but this is not a bad thing because it already comes with pretty much everything you might expect a modern motorcycle to have.

Features that are currently optional on more expensive bikes come standard on this. Any additions would equate to a bump in the price too, so keeping that in check is crucial if they want to maintain its “value” status.

KTM makes a big noise about their “Ready to Race” mantra. And, for the most part, they keep to their word, infusing all their bikes with sporty characteristics.

Back when it was first launched in 2017, they took it a step further by calling it “The Scalpel.” Once again, they delivered on their promise. It was a super sharp naked bike at a pretty decent price. Today, it hasn’t lost any of its sharpness, but the competition has upped its game and has all either surpassed or matched the level of “The Scalpel.”

Performance-wise, the Duke can still very much hold its own, and with over 100 horsepower, it still packs just as much punch as most of the competition. It is also a great bike for a twisty road, and will reward those willing to push it closer to its limit.

Design And Styling

KTM’s are not for everyone. Their styling is bold, and they don’t intend to leave anyone on the fence. You will either love it or hate it. What is interesting is the fact that the rest of their street lineup will be refreshed this year, but at the time of writing, it seems like the 790 will look exactly like it did when it first came to the market. You only get two color options, either gray or very (AKA KTM) orange. So you will have to choose between softening those hard edges or leaning into its loud character.

One aspect of the design that we simply have to admire is the dedication to both weight-saving and simplification. The sub-frame is all aluminum and has no plastics hiding it, the swingarm has an exposed open-lattice design and the frame is tiny, relying on the engine as a stressed member.

Part of the reason why the frame is so small is because of the initial design brief. Their focus was on making the bike as compact as possible, with an accessible seat height one of their top priorities. All this equates to a bike that feels much smaller than it really is.

It is, however – like pretty much any motorcycle – a compromise. If you are on the tall side, legroom is a little less than you might expect from a middleweight. The brakes are not from the top shelf, and as much as they do the job, they certainly don’t inspire as much confidence as the Brembo units found on the 890 R. It is the same story for the suspension, as it works great for most, but has its limitations with the front being non-adjustable and the rear only offering preload adjustment.

But, even without all the fancy bits, this second incarnation of the 790 Duke is still very agile, and most riders will run out of talent long before the machine reaches its limit. It is without doubt a compromise worth making, and if you are one of the few that feels like enough power isn’t really “enough,” the only bikes that offer “more” also cost more.

This is where things get really interesting. By moving the production to China, they can price this bike exceptionally well. At $9,199, it actually retails a whopping $1,300 less than the 2019 model, which we suspect doesn’t sit particularly well with customers who bought a 2019 790!

The bad news for them is great news for those who are in the market for one today. On paper, it fills the void left by the old 690 Duke in their model lineup. The 890 R is now a much bigger step up from what is in essence the base model now, yet still offers enough to compete in this hotly contested segment.

Versus The Competition

The middleweight naked bike segment is a very crowded space, with great bikes from every manufacturer. Some manufacturers even offer more than one option, KTM included.

With the 790 Duke, we need to turn our attention to the lower half of this segment. It will be taking on bikes like the venerable Suzuki SV650, Kawasaki Z650 and the Honda CB650R. All these bikes are very good, and certainly deserve a second look. But, the main competition comes in the form of the ever-popular Yamaha MT-07 and a bike from the company that helped build the 790 Duke in China!

CFMoto are on a roll lately and hasn’t put a foot wrong in recent years. The 800NK also gets the same KTM engine you will find in the 790 Duke.

This 790 engine had a myriad of reliability concerns when it came out, and now that production has moved to China, only time will really tell if those issues were indeed resolved. It is, however, impossible to ignore the incredible value the 800NK offers. For $700 less, you get what is essentially the same bike… wearing a cheap Chinese suit.

When it first broke cover, the Duke was priced much closer to the MT-09, and that was never a fair fight, with the Yamaha having significantly more power.

Now it competes with the MT-07, which is a much better comparison primarily because of the value the MT offers. Although the KTM has the upper hand in terms of outright power, the Yamaha hits back with unparalleled reliability. The MT-07 also offers most of its power early on, whereas with the Duke you need to wait until it gets pretty high up in the rev range, by which time you will be breaking at least one law. So, if you are after all-round value, the Yamaha might well win you over. Unfortunately, the recent update made a pretty big design change, which might not appeal to everyone.

Is It Worth Buying A KTM 790 Duke In 2024?

This is not a straightforward answer. Each buyer will have to answer another question first. If they are already OK with buying a bike made in China, why not opt for the cheaper version since it is now readily available?

The edge the 790 Duke has over its CFMoto sibling is a better electronics package, and more importantly, an established dealer network. That counts for quite a lot, but only the individual buyer will be able to tell if it is worth precisely $700.
