Mercedes-Benz’s mid-size van and people-mover range – the Vito, V-Class, eVito and EQV – have been recalled in Australia, as the car-maker’s emergency calling system may not work.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has recalled 255 examples of its 2023 Mercedes-Benz Vito, eVito, V-Class and EQV vans, owing to a hardware failure which could prevent the vehicle’s emergency calling system from working.
The recall is said to include Model Year 2023-2025 versions of the Mercedes-Benz ‘Model 447’ – the internal model code given to the Vito, eVito, V-Class and EQV vans – despite the facelifted 2024 model not yet arriving in local showrooms.
The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says: “Due to a hardware component connectivity issue, the Hermes Control Unit (ECE) may not operate as intended. In this case, the communication module might not be able to establish a network connection.
“If this occurs, the emergency call system (eCall) communication would not be available. If the eCall system is not available, in the event of an emergency it would not be possible for the vehicle occupants to connect with emergency services, either manually or automatically.
“As a consequence, emergency vehicles may not be directed to the affected vehicle or may be delayed. This could increase the risk of death if a serious injury has occurred.”

Mercedes-Benz has advised it will contact owners in writing to schedule an appointment with their authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership to have the work carried out as soon as possible, free of charge.
