The Tesla Model Y looks set to become the first electric vehicle to top Europe’s new-car sales charts across a full year, according to automotive industry reports.

The Tesla Model Y SUV will reportedly soon be announced as the best-selling new car in Europe in 2023, becoming the first electric vehicle to take the title in a market typically dominated by low-cost hatchbacks.

Preliminary data seen by industry publication Automotive News Europe has shown the Model Y will finish the year ahead of the second best-selling Dacia Sandero – one of Europe’s cheapest cars – despite Tesla’s electric SUV costing almost four-times as much as the city hatch.

In Germany and France, the Tesla Model Y is priced from €42,990 ($AU71,100) before on-road costs and subsidies, while the entry-level Dacia Sandero – which is based on the same platform as the Nissan Juke and Renault Clio – varies from €11,300 ($AU18,700) to €11,900 across the two countries.

While official full-year results have not yet been published, Automotive News Europe reports there were 254,822 Tesla Model Ys sold from January to the end of December 2023, giving it a comfortable lead over the Dacia Sandero’s 235,893 sales.

The publication reports the Tesla Model Y will set a number of firsts when it takes the official sales crown, such as the first electric car to finish on top, the first mid-size car to be the best-seller – in a market historically dominated by city hatchbacks – and the first so-called ‘premium’ model to win the sales race.

The Tesla Model Y’s rise up the European sales charts has been swift, having only taken its first monthly sales victory in September 2022.

In 2022 the Tesla Model Y was Europe’s 13th-most popular new car with 138,128 examples sold, a significant improvement on its 130th-place finish in 2021.

A rise in sales of the Tesla Model Y on the continent coincided followed the opening of the US-based electric car giant’s German factory near Berlin in early 2022.

As previously reported, the Tesla Model Y was the most popular new car for private buyers in Australia last year – according to data provided by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) – with 20,577 of its 28,769 total sales said to have come from non-business, fleet or government orders.

The electric SUV also launched itself into the number-one spot in the Australian Capital Territory – for all buyer types – becoming the first electric car to be the best-selling vehicle in any state or territory across a calendar year.
